Re: Hotpoint WMA44 at the end of it’s life?

Well, I have given up trying to contact Andy. I have contacted Integral Applicance Solutions in Exeter that were the only other close-ish people on your find and engineer search for my area. They were very helpful but begged to differ on whether it is viable to save my Hotpoint WMA44. They suggested replacing just the bearing on site results in a less reliable repair than replacing the rear section of the drum that comes with the bearing factory fitted, if I understood them correctly. They also were concerned that as the bearing had been noisy for sometime then it was possible the other fault was a result of water leaking into the electronics so that after the bearing replacement we would also require replacement boards/programming and then have a machine with other potentually water damaged components that might prove unreliable. They suggested, given the distance for the call out, that I would not see change from £250+ and advised that I either took the machine to a workshop for repair or bought a new one.

In the end I called Hotpoint service and have opted for their fixed fee repair or replace which they could do next day. I appreciate that this is not perhaps the outcome UK white goods would hope for but I have, I feel, done the best I could under the circumstances with washing now in absolute piles!

May I suggest that you contact Andy to check what his current contact details are and consider removing him from your find an engineer list as it would seem, from my experience at least, that he is no longer working or does not respond to calls, answer phone messages or emails.

Re: Hotpoint WMA44 at the end of it’s life?

I seem to be having some problems contacting Andy Rickard. I have been calling since Thursday and left a message Friday and sent an email through this web sites service engineer finding service all to no avail so far. I also found the phone number for Andy was different on the service engineer finding service from the number Bryan provided i.e. 01271 858780. Does anybody know the correct phone number for Andy? Is Andy still working does anybody know? Thanks

Thanks for the prompt reply Allsorts.

I am in North Devon, near South Molton. Any suggestions for local repairers?

As a slight correction to my original post, when the machine stops part way through a cycle it has the “Door”, “Wash”, “Rinse & Spin” and “Final spin” LEDs on all at once. Odd. Does that indicate any particular fault?

Nope, gave up trying. It seems to work OK (though I would guess less efficiently) without the temperature sensor. I need to adjust the temperature setting on the dial to get the fridge to maintain a sensible internal temperature between summer and winter but otherwise it regulates OK.

Seamy, thanks for the assistance, much apprecaited! I would love to know if the sensor can be replaced:

    Product number is 923 800 734.

Do I just gently lever off the control panel to get at the control PCB or is there another way in? I have a history of breaking things trying to get in to them to fix them, so little is designed for repair these days! I infamously took a hammer to an ansaphone after failing to open the welded plastic case, my wife’s favourite story many years after the event 😆

Seamy, yes, I absolutely agree. No.1 rule of working with electricity, don’t, isolate first.

I appreciate anybody can access this forum and also that anybody could say, for example, that they were a chartered electronics engineer who also happened to have C&G in IEE wiring regs. In my case it is true but whatever:

My problem is I can’t see how to get into the fridge nor where the sensor might be. Any experience getting into this model?

    Thanks for the confirmation Seamy.

How easy a job is it to get at the sensor? I guess if I could get access to the sensor connection to the control board I could clean the contacts and re-seat the connector and see if that fixes it.

I did contact Zanussi Electrolux customer support and (eventually!) got the following reply:

    “Thankyou for your email

Having checked with the technical department for you we can advise that it isn’t recommended to fit an Induction or half induction hob over a double
oven the problem is the same with a half induction because of the depth of the appliance there wouldn’t be enough ventilation room for the appliance.

    Hope this is some assistance.

    Kind Regards
    Electrolux Consumer Care”

I suspect it could be done by lowering the oven but my better half tells me that she would not be happy with such an visible adjustment and so, with both the advice of the manufacturer and my wife ringing in my ears, I have given up on my idea of an induction hob and selected the equivalent electrolux oven (much the same but cheaper than the Zanussi I believe…) and an electrolux ceramic hob namely EOU63102 and EHS60020K…got to better than the Candy the Kitchen co. wanted to bundle eh?

Don, once again, thanks for giving freely of your experience.

I guess all I can do is make sure (before I pay!) that the kitchen chap has contacted Zanussi and knows what the installation instructions are and is confident that there is the clearance required…

    Thanks!

Thanks for the advice, so that is why there are few halogen hobs on the market now!

Phidom: while I do not doubt your test on your old Tricity I have to say the halogen on my old aeg seems much faster than the ceramic zones that surround it…but then I have not bothered to do anything so scientific as a test so perhaps you are correct! Either way, I shall give up my hunt for a halogen hob. Ta.

Don: Exeter, sunny, today? Are you joking? Perhaps the few miles south made more difference than I think – near south molton it was sunny spells at best ;).

When you say induction hobs must be well fitted with adequate ventilation, does that mean above a built under double oven is out then, or does it mean I must be careful to ensure I meet the clearance between oven and hob etc in the manual? A quick look at an Electrolux induction hob suggests it will be OK in a 38mm work top as long as it is clear of the top of the oven and there is a 5mm ventilation gap between the top of the oven housing and the work top…

I note that my sister-in-law has an induction hob over a built under single oven that has failed several times…perhaps because of lack of adherance to the clearance required.

Re: Is an induction hob the way to go?

    Thanks for the tips.

As close to the controlability of gas as you can get is indeed a good point! A move to deepest darkest North Devon leaves the wife missing mains gas. With the current price of oil for central heating, I have to agree!

The current kitchen design does, as you supected, have the hobs slapped above a double oven. Is this a complete no-no then? Presumably the same suggestion (that the electics can get fried) would go for ceramic and halogen hobs too or are they more tollerant of heat?

    Your advice is much appreciated.

Re: Any advice on a new tall built in fridge? Thanks!

Don: Thanks for pointing out I was potentially about to buy a fridge/freezer when I wanted a larder fridge 😳 ! £600-ish seems quite a lot for a fridge but I would rather spend £600 and have it see out a good 5-10 years + than spend £200 and have grief.

Kwatt: So AEG/Electrolux are considered an OK bet. That is good to know. At least the kitchen company are not trying to shift me rubbish!

Anybody got any suggestions of other larder fridges I should consider?
Is £600-ish the sort of price I need to pay for a reasonable larder fridge likely to last a good few years?

    Thanks!
