Thanks very much for your prompt and helpful reply. I’ll certainly try a silicone-based furniture spray. Removing the drawer is probably more difficult – I did once try, but there are four screws, one of which simply refused to budge. I didn’t want to apply too much pressure due to the risk of distorting the runner and making the problem worse.

The drawer is the complete bottom compartment, and includes the fridge door, and the decorative wooden panel. The frustrating thing is that we chose the drawer type because it was supposed to be better for my wife, who is a wheelchair user; but in practice when the runners are so stiff, she virtually puts her shoulder out of joint when she tries to open it! Needless to say, we are not impressed!
