Hello. Thanks for your replies. Tim Downing, your answer worked perfectly.
I am attaching a picture of the correct placement, in case someone else looks at this thread in the future. I found this quite tricky because as I said before, the cover handle was broken, and so when I opened the door the spring wasn’t in place. It requires some force to put the spring into the correct position (I used some snub nosed pliers to place the ends of the spring in the slots on the cover handle), and if you’re not confident you’re doing it the right way, it’s a bit worrying that you’re having to force the spring.
The first two images show the correct placement of the spring, viewed from different angles.
[I have also shown as a third image the bracket behind the door – this comes off really easily and falls into the inside of the machine. If you need to retrieve it, the way I did it was to pull off the outer seal and put my hand down to get it. I used some washing up liquid to help put the seal back on. You can see some black tape that I have temporarily put on to stop it falling off again.]
