ParticipantRe: When is salt NOT salt?
Just browsing through some old topics and came across this one.
I quite understand the unsuitability of table salt for regenerating the softeners in dishwashers. However, what about the salt ‘pellets’ normally designed for the larger, Permutit-type water softeners?
Having had an old water softener removed, I have a couple of large sacks of these, and can’t see any obvious reason why they should not be used in my dishwasher – but then, you may know different! 😯
Any thoughts?

A bit more information:
The problem seems to occur first pretty consistently about 18 minutes into the “Quick 50” cycle. The hot wash has completed, the pump-out is fine, the refill is fine, then about three minutes into the cold rinse, the system stops.
If I restart, the problem normally recurs within five to ten minutes, sometimes as little as three. Is this a warm-up problem?
I have removed the controller cards and checked them carefully. There is no visual evidence of any dry joints, nor any burnt or faulty joints. No smell of ‘burning varnish’ or similar to indicate component overheating.
Referring to a point made in my original post, during this latest test, the voltage was varying between 213 and 226 during the hot wash cycle and everything performed perfectly. During the cold rinse, the heater is not on (obviously!) and the voltage is well within normal limits.
I should explain that I live in a rural area where the mains regulation is, indeed, pretty dire, but this machine has worked well for five years in those conditions!

No – the end lamp, dry lamp and program lamp (whichever one I selected) all flash simultaneously at about 2Hz. Nothing does anything at that point. Power off, power on again, immediate reset and can start again.
