I just tried the machine again before taking it to the dump. It looks like the repair man left it in diagnostic mode and it happily filled and turned the drum etc. On re-cycling it went back to it’s old troubles so it is the computer. Preety galling.

I have much appreciated the help and that a site such as this exists. I hope your ISE is a real winner and cuts down on the scandelous wastage.
Meanwhile a colleague has offered an old Indesit machine with a slightly leaky door seal (which we can cope with) to tie us over. I may be asking if it’s possible to replace the seal soon!The repair man cometh and after a while announced that it could be the computer board and that the outlet is gunged up and the pump is on its way out so it looks like after 3 years its heading for the land fill. It seems a terrible waste but that’s the way Economics is making our planet a rubbish tip of un-economic-to-repair appliances. I noticed a Boch 1400(?) machine for sale at about £269 but I can’t afford anything until next month so hopefully we can survive with a local laundry if they still exist.
OK I managed to swap the plugs around with a little help from Mr Stanley Knife to remove the keyway. Unfortunately no change except it now shows E90 so it’s probably spotted my sabotage. Impressive – except it can’t tell me what is actually wrong with it. Anyway I’ll swap them back and throw in the towel (fuguratively) and seek professional help.

After a bit (understated) of effort I have got the back off (the trick is the hidden bolts on the sides). I have checked the brushes and with 20mm on them I think that they are OK. So the heck with logic – it’s probably the inlet valve. As it is cold fill only can I be crafty and swap them around?
Yes I have just checked that again to be sure.
Would the stuck inlet valve stop the machine working if the spin cycle was selected? Logic (if that has anything to do with Washing Machine programming) would suggest not but it could be.
Is it easy for me to check the motor brushes?

It is an FJS 1225 W.
No water comes in but the inlet pipe is fine. It is very cold today but it has been out of action since Xmas Eve (typical domestic appliance timing).
The door does lock OK – I have to turn the unit off with the front switch and then on again to deactivate the lock.
As I said the unit runs for about 4 seconds- sound of the drain pump going – it does drain fully if I put some water in the drum – and it stops at the point when I would expect to hear water being let in – not a trickle in the soap tray.
If I move it on to a spin cycle however it stops again at about 4 seconds in. The drum doesn’t move though it is free to rotate – drive belt is OK.
Other possible symptoms:
Generally took 2-3 hours to do a 1 hour program
The area’s water is hard.
Unit is about 3 years old but used almost daily. Seems to be in good nick generally.
I am generally unlucky
