Great diagnosis, Expercat! We took the back panel off as it hadn’t been refitted properly anyway. There was a wire trapped between the blades. There were a couple of wires that hadn’t been clipped back into their housing, so we reseated those, and all is working perfectly. The only problem is that the blade appears to have started cutting through the sheathing on the wire.

I’ll phone the repair company to report – at least, thanks to you, we don’t need to pay another £45 callout to look at the noisy fan.

    Thanks for your help.

Thank you both. Appliance is currently running at 76db!!

It’s 5 years old. I’m just wary that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the fan until the day after the heater was replaced. It’s the model with the freezer at the bottom (E522B). Where is the fan? I’ve noticed the back panel of the freezer compartment has not been replaced properly as it sticks out on one side.

Would the engineer need to remove the back panel of the fridge in order to replace the defrost heater? (I mean, I know this went behind the freezer panel, but after he had said he had finished replacing it, he then decided to take everything out of my fridge, as an afterthought, to “check” something.)
