Thanks for going into this guys. In the end my machine wouldn’t do anything but F7 in the first minute. I called in a local guy who said he did Whirlpool (call out £20 – not bad compared to the £47 another guy wanted). He pulled out a tall very flat milky plastic tank which has the flowmeter built in and replaced it with a new one. That nailed it. It’s been fine ever since. Total cost £79. (took him nearly an hour plus his travelling time). I don’t think that’s bad after about 6 years continuous use. I wouldn’t have known how to replace the thing myself – he did all sorts of tricky stuff with hidden fixing and took a side panel off to get to it.
So there you go.
