Re: Dyson DCv6 direct drive head failure

There’s no circuitry in the head but there must be something in the body to cut power. I’ve had the whole thing apart, including the motor, there was a lot of fluff which I cleaned out and when I could get it to spin for maybe quarter of a turn (before cut out) I would see a puff of smoke.

Cleaning the brushes and around the coil assembly recovered lots of oily grime but yielded no results. I then connected a Dyson Battery directly to the motor and it span quickly, sparked and smoked a little but appeared to burn off any remaining muck.

The motor is now operating correctly again and I’ve reassembled the head.

Next time I’ll just try running directly with the battery to see if that resolves it without disassembly however there is obviously a risk there of burning out something permanently.

Hope this helps someone in the future
    Cheers

it seems to be as when I connect 5v DC to the two exposed pins the motor turns round. However when I pull the trigger to activate I don’t see the expected 16v across the pins which implies there is something going on.

Thanks, I thought the colour may have come from the copper but there was clearly a substance on the surface of the pipe that was sufficient in volume to drip from this pipe, hence my concern about a leak.

It seems to be working fine, if this doesn’t look odd I’ll wipe it off so I can see if it returns.

    Thanks

Yes but they’re presumably the same as all of the alternative/equivalent parts which you can find for as little as £4?

I’d just like some confidence that whatever I take the trouble to fit will last more than a year. If the official Bosch part will last 7 times longer then I don’t mind paying 7 or 8 times more for it as I’ll be saving time. I’m just wondering if that will actually be the case or whether my now older motor is just wearing the brushes more quickly due to age?

    Thanks

But are they worth £34 instead of £4? Are they a different compound or is it likely to be motor wear that is resulting in the current ones wearing so quickly?
    Thanks

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I’ve just pulled some metal out of the drain pump (that was causing problems with the machine) and the motor wasn’t coming back to life. A quick look underneath and it seems my brushes are on the way out once more.

Shouldn’t they last more than a year? I bought a pair off a chap who advertises on eBay, rather than official Bosch ones (if they exist?) Do these things vary in quality and if so, could someone point me at a set that will give a bit more service. The original ones lasted 7.5 years so were considerably better.
    Thanks

Well looks like it was the brushes, picked up a pair and popped them in and it’s now come back to life. They were pretty short so I’m hoping that’s it.

Thanks for the advice guys, and your excellent video Penguin. Saved me the £600 the misses was keen to blow on a new Miele.

    Cheers
