    Re: samsung fridge freezer RS20

Point taken about the copy/paste thing, just saw two pretty much identical probs as i was typing reply to one of them. Sorry about that.

Based on the advice of several qualified engineers (such as yourselves) there is certainly a modification for this model and the original iffy part is no longer available… which was why Samsung sent out the infra red type defroster insisting that it is a replacement for the original, they also advised that there is some modification necessary to fit the part. The engineers did a lot of phoning around and it took them two weeks to find information supporting the fact that there is a problem with the original defrost unit in these fridges. The part was ordered and was compatible except that the fittings had also been modified. I had the said part sitting in my kitchen for two weeks while Comet attempted to get info from Samsung about the correct gas fittings but without much luck except that Samsung would send a big bag of assorted fitting down for them to play with. It was at this point they decided to stop inconveniencing me and take it away!
Its a pity Helo_75 that you have chosen to be condecending about everything I have said and brand me as “another underinformed individual” as my information was directly from professional engineers such as yourself who made a commendable effort to research and solve the problem over a two month period. Like you, they had not encountered the problem before either, but now as result of their efforts they are wiser. Perhaps in this case, it is you who were underinformed?
It may also be worth you reading my reply to your last comment on the other thread

Re: Samsung RS20CCMS American style fridge freezer problem

Fair enuf Kwatt, but I didnt realise posting the same reply to two very similar probs was against the rules so I apologise for that! Didnt see and still cant find the comment you said you made about that by the way.

    Helo 75,
The reason I have inflicted another Samsung on myself is purely due to the fact that the design fault has been sorted and I have accepted a newer considerably updated model. Also I am what would be considered a “Samsung fan” after a long relationship with the company’s products… even though their aftersales service leaves something to be desired!
The descision was also made following reports from the MANY engineers who visited me (and several others who I spoke to including one of my own customers who is a very experienced engineer) that Samsung fridges are generally known to be amongst the most reliable units available. I respect their advice and experience.
This is borne out by the relatively low cost of extended warranties available on the items. (unless there is another factor, such as cheap parts, involved in this of course).
If I gave the wrong impression that I am an anti-engineer know-it-all, please be informed that my information and facts were based on the research and efforts of the most qualified and experienced engineers who helped me. The comment about Samsungs lack of support was the opinion of ALL the engineers who visited me, which I also experienced personally.
The first few engineers made a wrong diagnosis of the problem based solely on past experiences. We cant all be the best of the best and everyone can learn something from someone who has had a prob like I had.
I am in the “repair tech” business of a different kind and I always take on board advice from my customers who have experienced something I havent in my 20 years of professional experience. It pays off!

Secondly, I’m not really sure why you consider some of the points I raised as being dubious. I would welcome your critiscisms so as to give me the opportunity to reply to them. I make a point of basing anything I post to the web on absolute fact or reliable source as I do not ever wish to mislead anyone.
Please be aware that my experience was not based on a problem that was solved with a phone call and a visit by an engineer, it has been going on for six months and seven engineer visits plus a lot of internet research based on this ONE single model. And A LOT of research and chasing around by the guys at Comets workshop.
    Cheers,
    Simon.

Re: Samsung RS20CCMS American style fridge freezer problem

Well obviously my last post was pulled for some reason! It would be nice to know why as the reason for the post was because if someone less determined than myself should be in the unfortunate situation that I was with my fridge freezer, they would be faced with an ENORMOUS pile of call-out charges and end up having to buy a new fridge in the end anyway.
My experience was a result of lack of communication between manufacturer and engineers and a denial that a design fault existed which was proved to be not the case.
My posting was based on 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} fact and relied on no opinions or guesses. So I guess thats that!

Re: Samsung RS20CCMS American style fridge freezer problem

I forgot to metion that if you remove the lower cover in the freezer compartment, you will find that if you have the dodgy matrix type of defrost unit, it will be a square of bendy pipes below the main freezer element and will be totally engulfed in ice.

You are right in quoting “not fit for the purpose” as this what Trading Standards told me too.

Please note that your fridge is exactly the same age as mine and the problem started at almost exactly the same time!

In defence of the Comet engineers, they did everything in their power and abilities to help me and although they were confident they could eventually fix my fridge, they decided I had suffered enough and told me they were going to authorise a new one. The shop manager also was very very helpful although he did try to get me to part with another £100 for the nearest replacement model (RSH1NHMH) until I reminded him of Comets legal obligation to supply like-for-like.
    Cheers,
    Simon

    Re: samsung fridge freezer RS20

Ok I can tell you the exact problem with your fridge!
    1. There IS DEFINATELY a design fault with the auto defrost matrix which causes the ventilation system to completely ice up and cause the fridge to overheat and the freezer over-ices trying to compensate.
    2. As a result of this, the system has now been modified with an infra-red element behind the defrost cover which replaces the troublesome defrost matrix (lower left in the freezeer compartment).
    3. Symptoms are: Ice on bottom of freezer comp. Overfreezing of freezer. Warm fridge. Ice in the vent behind grille in lower left of the FRIDGE compartment.
    4. A 48hr defrost (no less than 48 hours) will buy you another three weeks of use before symptoms return.

It is possible that your problem is just the defrost sensor… but I doubt it!

I HAD TO DO THE FOLLOWING TO GET PROBLEM FIXED!
I had the same problem with mine at 3 years old… a year outside its warranty. This was in September 2007, I was advised by a tech in Scotland that there is a design fault with the unit and there is a modification available. Samsung denied this and were not interested. I contacted Trading Standards and they advised me that the failure was not acceptable in such a short period and to contact Comet (the sellers) and demand a repair under UK trading standards law (see website). Comet sent SEVEN engineers out over the following four months, firstly they couldnt find the problem, then they eventually found out there WAS a design fault with these fridges and there WAS a modified part available. They ordered the part and found it wouldnt fit because the new modified fridges also had the inside modified to take the modified part! Then they got all the parts and Samsung didnt supply the fittings and were very vague on which fittings were needed. Eventually Comet twigged that due to total lack of technical support from Samsung, they would have to write off the unit with and give me a new one.
It is arriving on Thurs 14th Feb.

I hope this solves your problem!
    Simon.
