Final diagnosis by whirlpool is internal wiring fault!

I managed to speak to the manager of the service partner today so I at least got some sense out of someone who knew something about the Whirlpool fridge freezers!
He consulted Whirlpool technical services who said that there were no known problems with this model (surprise!)
The best he could offer was to fit a new rear board (which I have already done myself). The part I fitted was genuine Whirlpool so I assume it will come from exactly the same place as the one he is proposing. I had previously bought a second replacement rear board on the basis that the company who sold me the original board have agreed that if there is a fault with the 1st board then I would get a refund (wait and see if this materialises!). The service partner manager said he would prefer to provide a rear board from his supplier so that it would be guaranteed for a year. Why this would be any different to the part I have bought, I really have no idea.
He confirmed that they have no diagnostic equipment that could detect faulty control boards on Whirlpool fridge freezers, which was contrary to what Whirlpool Customer Care told me (a lesson here, on more than one occassion I have been given incorrect information by Whirlpool Customer Care). On this basis I am reluctant to pay over £135 quid for another board (including labour) even if it does have a 1 year guarentee seeing as there is no proof that it is this part that is at fault and, judging by their reaction to my claims that the front board that they replaced might not have been faulty in the first place, I don’t reckon on getting much joy out of them if the replacement does not cure the fault.
One useful piece of information he gave me was that he asked if we’d had any power cuts recently, which indeed we have. A friend actually witness a small explosion at the substation nearby which, putting two and two together could have damaged one or other of the boards that were fitted at the time.
Fortunately I have one of each front and rear boards that weren’t the originals and weren’t fitted when the power cut occurred. I now have these two boards fitted and some of the erratic behaviour does initially appear to have stopped (Fridge display changing from 2 to 6 deg C when the door switch is pressed af few times!??).
I am trying not to be too optomistic about this at the moment but if these units are sensitive to ‘spikes’ in the electricity supply then a surge protector might just do the trick. (found one in Argos for £7.99)
Does anyone think this sounds feasable or am I barking up the wrong tree here???
I would be interested to hear if anyone else has had similar problems.
Will keep you posted on the long term success or otherwise.

No special plugs fitted.
The complete shut down is rare (usually when we’re on holiday!) but the panel display often changes. the last two times it locked up the freezer temp displayed 4 and the fridge temp display was blank.
Does anyone have any information on the model numbers regarding replacement boards? The Whirlpool ‘customer care’ talked about ordering front and back boards as a pair to ensure that there were no communication problems. This sounded odd to me as I thought all new boards would be compatable.
Also, does anyone have any information regarding the different product codes for the rear boards? have I been supplied with the correct one?
What about replacing capacitors? I now have 3 of each board to go at!!!! (only two paid for!)
Sorry for all the questions but I am really desperate. Whirlpool and their service partner are just winding me up and they can’t even communicate with each other.
Any advice would be much appreiated.
