Thanks ever so much for the tips. I got the bits from UKWG at a level where I could risk failure (ie the price of a few pints!) and, as you say, the fitting was a doddle. The drum now rotates as new, completely silently. I’m not quite there yet though. The motor needs replacing (see post in the “wanted” section). If I can’t fix that, then the machine is probably scrap, so look in your bins folks!

I am still going to persue this to the bitter end, as I don’t fancy a machine that I can’t fix when necessary. The modern ones where that is possible are out of my price range at the moment.
