I wouldn’t advise running it with power on with the lid or any other panels off.
Thanks for the post bazza500.
I just ran the dryer for about 4 minutes and it certainly didn’t stop at any point to change rotation. Should I leave it for longer or should it have got rotated (and got hot) within that time ?

Thanks for post Martin.
Does the reversing timer control the stop starts and direction of the drum ? If so, the dryer is still stopping and starting while it’s on although I have no way of checking if the drum is changing direction.

Thanks again for the post linrew.
I actually thought that the fan was fixed to the thread and detachable from the rear of the cooker as they appeared to be one piece.
I’ll try some WD40 but there’s not a lot of exposed thread to get a pair of pliers around in order to remove the fan.
I’ll post again tomorrow once I’ve had a go.

Thank You for the post linrew. I’ve been away for a week and have only just read your reply.
I have tried to remove the element for the oven (from the front) but the element is retained top centre on a bracket held by a screw that is concealed by the oven fan. I have tried removing the fan but without success.
Do you have any experience with the Neff U1721N0GB/02 to know how to remove the fan or element retaining bracket.
Thanks again.

Thanks again Simon46.
Will the thermostat like start working again once the element is replaced or is this potentially another problem ?

Thanks for the post Simon46.
The ENR number is U1721N0GB/02
When you say the clock has to be reset, do you mean the clock/timer or something else ?
I should also add that, since the “pop”, the lower oven thermostat light no longer comes on. Is this also a sypmtom of a failed element ?
If it is the element, do you have any idea of the cost of repair ?
Thanks again.
