Just to complete the loop on this.
The part which had developed a crack and which was causing the leak was an “air break and turbine”, replaced with part reference C00256546 which is branded Indesit / Hotpoint / Ariston / Creda / Cannon.

My missus gave up on my incompetence and got somebody round to have a look at this.
Apparently there is a small tank which holds some water within the machine – no idea why, this is all second hand – and this tank has developed a crack.
The chap has tried to seal the crack, it has improved the situation but there is still a small amount of leakage. Next step is to replace the tank.
I haven’t had any flashing warning lights so far.
