ParticipantProblem Solved!!!!!
It’s a bit unconventional but here’s how I did it. I procrastinated for a while (no, that’s not a euphamism) and did any other job that I could rather than sort things out. Five and a half weeks it took, according to her who was washing the pots on the sink in the meantime.
Under mounting domestic pressure I then waved the spanners at the dishwasher and threatened to pull it out for stripping down. Just out of curiosity I then turned the power back on and lo & behold…. it worked okay. Undoubtedly, waving the spanners had an important restorative effect where everything else I had tried had failed miserably.
I’m hoping that after a prolonged period without power it forgot it was stuck in a doom loop and started again from square one. Or maybe I just got lucky. Chances are it will happen again, so we’ll see what happens next time.

ParticipantThanks for that. I was hoping to get away without stripping it down, but I’ll put my Saturday morning to one side and report back on the results.

ParticipantRe: John Lewis JLWM1201 Washer – Help Please
Strange! I got out the electrical toolkit then mouthed a few obscenities in preparation for the trial before me. Just to be on the safe side before I unplugged, I had one last go to get it working.
It worked. It’s currently washing the dog’s towels and we’ll see what happens next.
I’m convinced that there are some PCB related gremlins awaiting, but they won’t emerge again until after the discounted offer I found on a top of the range Bosch replacement has expired.
Thanks for the help so far!

Okay, many thanks for that. There’s no on/off switch, unless it’s built into the selector dial, but I’ll trace the path anyway.
What’s the mains filter on this model? Is it just a fat caapcitor or something a bit more sophisticated?

Model is a September 2006 purchased FRBB36AF20/2. Service number is 8686 158 15030.
The entire machine went dead at less than 12 months and had the PCB replaced under warranty. The repair man warned me about capacitor problems, and I might even still have the old board in the shed waiting for 4 new components.
It’s now started playing up again. The freezer temp alarm goes off and the food is softening. It tries, but cannot hold temperature. We’ve cleared it out and it can now hold -18C. The fridge side thinks it is holding 2C, but an independent thermometer says 10-12C. The fan is running and stops when the door is opened. I can’t hear the compressor, but it might be drowned out by the noise of the fan. If push comes to shove, I’ll pull it out of the alcove and check behind to listen what’s working and what isn’t. The water dispenser is working and (with the freezer empty) the ice maker seems to be squeezing a few out.
Two questions. Firstly, is my problem the PCB, and will the standard repair work? If not, what is it? Secondly, if the old PCB was completely dead, can I swap capacitors on that and have a go, or was the original problem more serious and I should just chuck that board away and do a repair on the one in the fridge?
Grateful for any help and advice, many thanks.
Bump. Can anyone help with this please?
In the abscence of any replies Ive gone ahead and ordered full set of 9 capacitors and 4 relays for the rear board, including some caps from RS that are actually small enough to fit on the board. If it all works, I’ll post part numbers later.
