    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

    Greg,
Well I bit the bullet, soldered the joint myself and hey presto – hot water!!

Over the weekend I gave the whole machine a thorough clean – urgh!
the amount of grot kind of puts you off having a dishwasher though,
especially round the door seal and in the tubes to the spray heads.

The hardest thing to shift was the grey coating over everything,
    in particlar the racking.
My cure-all solution to cleaning stubborn dirt in awkward places
is the pressure washer – but this proved useless, it had no effect
at point blank range even though it can strip paint off concrete.
Yet, curiously the coating does come off with a gentle rub of the thumb.
This all had to be meticulously sponged off, there must be an easier way.

Well thanks once again for all your help.

I would be grateful if you had time if you
could answer a few more questions :

    1) It seems you can open and close the door and then resume the
program by pressing the On button, is there a time limit
after which pressing the button will not resume the program?

    2) Is there a way to end the cycle part way through and
pump out the machine, eg if you just wanted to test
that the water was heating ?

    3) If the heater or motor had to be replaced,
can this be done in situ or does the bottom come off ?

    4) Where is the resin that is involved in the softening process ?

    5) Does the bottom connector for the spray arms fit like this
with the outer edge under the grill :

    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/barfblog/gra … _3201M.JPG

not like this with the outer edge over the grill :

    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/barfblog/gra … _3202M.JPG

    6) Does the upper spray arm part fit like this with the hard
plastic oval against the feed tube like this :

    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/barfblog/gra … _3203M.JPG

and the soft piece on top of that :

    Greg,
hmmm I’ll sleep on that one – but in the mean time I really appreciate your help, your advice has been excellent.

    Greg,
OK, got the pcb from behind the settings buttons (Intensive, Normal, Eco etc) and there is a burnt out pin :

    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/barfblog/gra … G_3251.JPG

Is this the one you suspected ? If so my soldering prowess is not exactly factory standard, is there a neat way of soldering this joint without unsoldering the adjacent joints and melting the board ?

    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

    Greg,
Thanks, any idea why the water isn’t heating then ? I did a normal wash (65 degrees) and checked the water pumped out after the wash and rinse phases. I also opened the door during the wash cycle to check the temp.

    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

    Greg,

The resistance between the left terminal (red lead) and the right terminal (green & white lead) is 23 ohms, there is no reading between the left terminal (red lead)and the central terminal ( 2 leads – red and white + purple and white).

    I’ve posted a clearer picture :

    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

    Gegsy,
All back together, no leaks, water pumping round matrix fine. But bit of a blow – NO HEAT !! I did have the water supply off momentarily at the start of the cycle, not sure if this would cut it out for the cycle.

Can you suggest how to test the heater ? Is there a thermostat that can be tested ?

Is the heater the white oval part as shown here top right ?

    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

    Gegsy,
Thanks for that, the pipe from the metering unit was almost, maybe completely blocked, this has cleaned up like new. So has the antiflood/pressure unit, we’ve even cleared the water matrix apart from a couple of small black marks in the most inaccessible corners, the red valve now moves freely.

I havn’t been able to clean the centre pipe 3 in the picture below

    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/barfblog/gra … mbered.jpg

but to be honest it’s only a light coating on the inside for the first 6 inches. Is it possible to take the bottom of the machine off, I’ve hesitated from doing this in case it all falls to bits, looks like it’s held on by 4 screws.

There is a slight bit of staining on the top of the salt container.

Is there anything else worth doing while I’ve got it open ?

    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

gegsy – thanks for your comments, sorry but I don’t know the names of the parts very well.
I’ve put some numbers on the diagram :

    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/barfblog/gra … mbered.jpg

Am I right that the water matrix is the plastic set of moulded tubes up the side of the machine ?

If so, there seems to be a major blockage in the matrix at 1 – are you saying this can’t be cleared ?
If not any idea how much this would cost ? Model is Bosch SGS5312GB/12

2 – is this the antiflood/pressure unit that you think may be cleared ?

3 – is this the clear ribbed pipe which goes from the metering unit to the sump ?

4 – there seem to be white crystals here like soap crystals, is this normal ?

    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

    Martin,
Loved the photo, kids not too impressed when I put the hamster in a hot wash though.

Have taken the side panels off now, please see photos of what look like blockages to me :

    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/barfblog/gra … G_3186.JPG

Would I be doing the right thing by removing the plastic tube affair and cleaning out ?
Plumbing in 3183 looks blocked also, or is that a filter ?
Any suggestions what to unblock with, not bleach I suppose ?
Any thing else I should look at while it’s open ?

    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

Martin – thanks, not far off ‘going in’ now

Trilobite – thanks, yes ‘she’ does use the economy wash a lot, then complains when it’s not spotless.
There is no rust inside, just muck, I’ve given it a clean now.
The idea of the photos was to show that there are white deposits
inside the machine at the end of the wash, this suggests the deposits are in the water during the final rinse doesn’t it ?.
I am trying the hot wash with nothing in the machine as you suggest.

    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

Martin – thanks, looks like I’ll have to do that.

This site seemed to offer simple solutions (unblock this pipe, fix that dry joint) which saved a bit of money.

Is there nothing I can try myself ? Whats the best way into the machine to check the blocked water level sensor or sump hose as you suggest.

    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

Trilobite – thanks for that, I agree with what you say and if
I was responsible for the dishes I would use Finish,
but as we have a sceptic tank and her indoors tries to be
    green we use Ecover.

But I think this is getting off the point.

Please could the experts Gegsy, Boro & BSH man comment on
the points raised so far before we fork out on a new one or a repair or
I blindly take the machine to bits. At the moment I havn’t got
a plan of action and need some help.

    1) Jim said “If the resin in the regeneration unit has become gunged up then it is not possible to clear this, several other posibiltities such as regeneration valve failure etc. “

    2) Martin said “Looks like undesolved detergent to me? That would be caused by water starvation (i.e blocked water level sensor or sump hose?). “

    3) The deposits don’t taste particularly salty, what is it ?

These are the links to the photos of the deposits :

and this is the link to the photo of the rating plate :

    Re: dishwasher – white deposits

Trilobite – we normally use Ecover dishwasher tablets + rinseaid, the dishwasher has worked since new (7 years) on this.

Since the problem started we’ve tried :
Finish tablets, Calgon, and done a Dishwasher Clean (not sure if that was
    Finish or not).

Seems more like something has gone wrong or changed. I was hoping someone had seen something similar before.
