Not one to give up I spent another few hours searching after no response here (did nobody else know the answer or am I not asking in the right way – or in the right place ? )

Well the ‘thing’ is called a metering tank. Once I’d worked that out I found the right part was £27 delivered from Ransome Spares. Its odd – it didn’t come up looking through hundreds of items of ‘AEG Dishwasher Spares’ – but as soon as I knew what it was called I found it in seconds. Fitted in minutes and no leak now.

With hindsight the time I spent trying to clean it was a waste given the price to replace. One more bit of plastic in landfill, but at least its save a whole dishwasher from being scrapped for another year or two.
