    Just to update you,with regard to the brushes I fitted,I am afraid that after all that, the motor appears to have burnt out,as it would not spin any faster than 600 rpm without the commutator flashing over and tripping the main circuit breaker on the fusebox with a lot of smoke and a terrible acrid smell,so I ended up biting the bullet and buying a nice new machine.
