When I eventually turned it on , the compressor did not kick in at all.
Now wiating to be collected by the council!

Many thanks for both the advice, its much appreciated, thank you.

I removed the freezer drawers there was no ice on the rear panel, but a bit of frost. However there was a large chunk of flat ice under the drawer which I removed.
I will try the 24 hour turn off and check if the compressor then runs constantly (I guess I will just hear a continuous whirring rather than sporadic silence).
