As if right on cue, a couple of days after we were talking about appliances all being much of a muchness to consumers, we picked up on this video from The Gadget Show, which you can watch.

 +++SPOILER ALERT+++

Anything under the video assumes you’ve watched it or, don’t want to.

Please feel free to draw your own conclusions but the upshot of what’s said for us is that in practical terms at least from a performance point of view, there’s so little in it that there’s no point in paying the extra for the Miele.

We were actually quite surprised at that result in terms of it being so close.

Normally we’d be very wary of tests like this but, from what we can see The Gadget Show has done a pretty good job here in testing, way better than most will.

That said, there’s a huge caveat for customers that watch this, not all machines are created equal and not all of them will wash as well as shown here. We tested a lot of machines for Trusted Reviews and there were some surprising and profound differences in wash performance from machine to machine.

Do not assume that any machine or more will be as good or better than the Miele in performance as a lot of them just won’t be.

More importantly, though, it speaks directly to what we were discussing in the aforementioned article that you can read here; if there is no compelling reason to pay the extra for the Miele, then why would you?

If you consider the Miele is roughly 2.5 times the cost yet, according to Miele, will last a lot longer it still leaves people thinking that they can pay £300 upfront but do that 2.5 times before they’re any worse off. Many people will take the punt that the two and half machines will last longer and, they get a new machine every so often with any advances that brings.

And really when you boil it down, that’s the only real compelling reason to buy the Miele (other than brand snobbery if you’re into that) given the evidence to hand and that, should the Miele break there’s every chance getting it sorted will cost as much as a new Indesit machine.

Indesit can’t exactly sleep easy either as there are a slew of machines you can buy for less than it as well. Okay, so they’re not liable to be very good but you get the point.

Without a compelling reason to buy a particular brand, a unique selling point, there’s no reason to buy any other than on the specs and price is out point.
