Michigan’s two US senators are appealing directly to the Bush administration for help keeping Electrolux from taking their manufacturing business to Mexico.
Just two days after city leaders sent their final offer to the company in hopes of keeping Montcalm County’s largest employer, Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow are asking President Bush to intervene. The senators are calling on Bush’s Secretary of Commerce Don Evans to make the refrigerator plant a priority.
In a letter to Evans, Levin and Stabenow said, “given that an essential part of the Commerce Department’s mission is to provide resources to communities to create and retain jobs, we hope that the department will provide necessary assistance to keep these thousands of jobs in Michigan.”
A spokesperson for Senator Stabenow said they are hopeful that the administration will weigh in on the pending announcement.
The Electrolux decision is expected Friday. Until then, Michigan’s elected officials are hoping to make sure the refrigerator manufacturer’s final answer doesn’t have a chilling effect on the local economy.
