In the same week that Matag close their plant in Illinois they have also announced that they will lay off a further possible 170 jobs from its washer and dryer plant in Newton.
Maytag have stated that the reason for this is due to a lower demand on certain products produced at the Newton plant. The exact number of layoffs have yet to be determined but these could take effect from a week tomorrow.
Appliance maker Maytag Corp. (MYG) on Thursday reported a strong rise in quarterly profit but its shares fell 6 percent on weakness at the Hoover vacuum unit.
A 50-employee Maytag Corp. warehouse here will remain open until mid-February, delaying the last phase of the refrigerator maker’s pullout from Galesburg by about six weeks, the company announced.
About one thousand repairmen employed by Maytag before the appliance maker was bought by Whirlpool earlier this year are expected to begin working for a different repair company next year.
