A St. Clair County judge signed a settlement this week in a class-action suit against the Maytag Corp. over problems with its Neptune front-loading washing machines sold from April 1997 to last July.
The agreement offers free repairs or a big discount on a new washer for hundreds of thousands of appliance owners nationwide.
If a washer can be fixed, the owner can choose between having it repaired or, depending on the date of purchase, up to $500 to buy a new machine,
If a washer can’t be fixed, the settlement provides the owner up to $1,000 for a new machine, depending on the age of the old one.
The agreement also provides fees totaling $8.25 million for plaintiff attorneys who handled the suit. That amount will be distributed among two dozen law firms nationwide who worked on the case.
