WORKERS at one of North Wales’ biggest factories were told they must double their contributions if they want to protect their pensions.

While staff at the Hotpoint factory, in Bodelwyddan, are deciding what action to take, union officials are seeking legal advice on the situation.

All members of the pension scheme at the plant were told by the scheme’s trustees they anticipate a shortfall in the fund.

Instead of restricting benefits they are calling on members to double their contributions which currently stand at 3%.

Bob Clowes, works convenor for the largest trade union at the plant Amicus, said it was a “final salary” scheme to which the company contributed 9%.

Even with the increased personal contribution it represented good value, he said.

“Many members are concerned at the rise and it is up to them what step they take while all I can do through the union is to seek advice on the legality of the position.

“Nobody is pleased about having to pay more but we have to be realistic,” he said..
