Comet has announced a further 39 redundancies at its Hull business centre further to the job cuts announced last month that we reported previously.

The firm began a consultation with staff at the beginning of March, saying that 98 of the 206 employees at the offices in Hull could face losing their jobs. The 59 individuals who are not facing redundancy have either been retained in their roles or have successfully applied for other positions within the company.

A spokesperson for Comet said the firm had consulted with employees throughout the process to ensure they were kept fully informed of developments at each and every stage.

No staff in the customer information centre have been affected.

Comet’s managing director Hugh Harvey said: “This was a difficult but necessary step in the management of the business.

“It is more important than ever that Comet manages its costs effectively while retaining its commitment to customer service”.

We have been told however from various sources, although unconfirmed and short of detail, that there are liable to be further job cuts within Comet over the coming months as the company attempts to control costs in the current economic climate.
