Samsung’s been busy trying to innovate in the fridge freezer sector again with a couple of new lines that they have unveiled at CES in Las Vegas this week in what they call their Chef Collection.

Samsung Food Showcase fridge freezer from their premium Chef CollectionThe Samsung Chef Collection was developed in collaboration with world-class chefs under the company’s Club Des Chefs program to create what Samsung describes as “a suite of premium professional chef-level appliances.”

A Samsung spokesperson said that, “By working closely with Samsung Club Des Chefs, we’ve created kitchen appliances that offer an awe-inspiring level of flexibility, organisation, ease of use and premium style to meet the needs and wants of even the most discerning home cook.”

Let’s hope that the quality level is raised as well as we’re pretty sure the prices will be.

Samsung says that the metal-finish Food Showcase model provides practical storage and organisational solutions such as an exterior door compartment that’s divided into three zones for cooking items (like cheese and sauces), and a lower kids’ level for juice boxes and fruit cups. The refrigerator also includes an interior compartment for longer storage of larger, fresh food items, and a metal cooling guard on the inside of the front door to capture cold air and maintain optimal temperatures.

While some may say that the new door in a door model is aping the LG idea of storage within the door itself Samsung have taken the idea one step further by apparently using the whole door and not just a section of it.

Quite how well this will work or, how it will affect the energy rating remains a mystery for the time being but, as appliance engineers, it seems a bit odd to remove a whole load of insulation from the door as it should, in theory at least, lead to longer running times which of course means, more power used.

The model is a Samsung RH22H9010SR which we are not sure will come to Europe as yet is shown in the image to the right.

On another model Samsung showed off display LEDs through the door itself, which is interesting and looks pretty good but we see problems. If that PCB goes faulty and the display goes then it’s going to be a full door assembly that will be needed and, that will not come cheap.
