Regular readers of this website may recall an article some months ago about an experiment Sainsburys were running with Bosch and their smart fridge. We say “smart” when what it really is would be a fridge with a camera in it and an app so, not that smart.

Anyway, off the back of that by the look of it Sainsburys is set to hand out one million free fridge thermometers to its customers.

There we go, how to make an old unconnected fridge smarter, add a thermometer. Genius eh?

Reportedly Sainsburys plans to hold in-store events in all of its supermarkets and “a number of” its convenience stores on 10 and 11 September, when it will give out the free thermometers to customers.

Staff will advise customers that fridges should be at a temperature of between 0 and 5 degrees to keep food fresh, and will also be on hand to offer tips on reducing food waste.

The supermarket first gave away the Sainsbury’s branded thermometers to 300 residents in Swadlincote – the test site for its £10m ‘waste less, save more’ project that we think was linked to the whole Bosch connected fridge thing.

So while manufacturers are all slugging it out over who’s got the best smartest fridge in Berlin at the IFA trade show Sainsburys just cuts straight to the thing people should be aware of. And, it doesn’t cost the best part of two grand either!
