The UK has missed the 13 August deadline for effecting legislation to implement the Waste Electronic and Electrical Directive (WEEE), leaving it liable to a substantial fine from the EU.
However, the UK government is only one of a number of states that have failed to “transpose” the directive by the date set, and it is playing down suggestions that it will be heavily punished. The DTI says that the importance of the regulations requires detailed consultation, and it remains confident that the directive will be passed into UK law during the course of this year.
At issue is how the directive, which calls for retailers and manufacturers to operate a take-back policy on goods such as computers and TVs, will be implemented.
