FORT SMITH, Ark. — Two Fort Smith manufacturers that supply the local Whirlpool Corp. refrigerator plant have launched operations in Mexico.
Whirlpool has said it plans to move some of its Fort Smith operation to Mexico but has not made details public. Moll Industries has opened an operation in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. Indiana Tube started production in Ramos Arizpe earlier this year.
A Moll spokeswoman said the plastic parts plant will supply Whirlpool and other companies in Mexico. But the company said none of its 300 Fort Smith workers are to be laid off.
Indiana Tube, which manufactures condensers and tubes for Whirlpool, plans to close its Fort Smith facility by the end of 2005. That’s from Indiana Tube’s parent company, Handy and Harman. The plant has 31 workers at a facility built in 2000
