I see this sentence banded around alot, but to people saying it take note, its NOT true, you only need to be CORGI registered if doing gas work as part of your business or for reward.

The only legal requirement is that you are “competent” to do the work you are undertaking.

I still agree obviously with the fact that we dont give out any info on repairing gas appliances on here, but we really shouldnt give out false information to people who come on for advice either.

On a similar subject a local fitter is known of by CORGI apparently for working on gas as part of his business while not registered, but they havent built a case against him due to the fact that the jobs of his they have checked were fitted completely to regulations and in good working order so they have nothing what they can “do” him on apart from the fact he is working on gas while unregistered and aparently they arent chasing him on that unless he does something wrong.

So why have I just shelled out £1.5k on ACS and paid my CORGI reg fees if they arent really needed ???

This is true!!!!! and I might add that CORGI are unlikely to do anything if an installer has fitted an appliance wrong.
A couple of year ago I came across a balanced flue gas fire fit into a chimney breast !!!!!!!!!!! Customer complaint was that it kept going out..
The bloke that fit it worked for British Gas but did the job as a foreigner tried to get CORGI involved but they were not interested in the slightest.

A sort of half answer at least so far as the public are concerned from a UKW point of view.

The crux of it is, prove the competence to remain litigation free if no certification is available to prove it for you.

As far as the Public are concerned in the forums, I think we should stay “on message” – Don’t!

I may be missing something here, but surely the above quote can’t be correct? Surely Corgi can’t knowingly allow a non registered Engineer to carry on doing gas work? I thought that was prosecution time??

Re: “You must be CORGI registered to work on gas”

No, you don’t if you are not operating commercially. Hence the general public can buy and fit gas appliances.

Just look at B&Q, I can walk in there today and walk out with a new boiler if I like and fit it myself perfectly legally even though I am personally now no longer CORGI registered although the business is as are the engineers.

Ditto I can do whatever I like to my gas hob.

What I can’t do is have someone pay me to do that in any way, or at least that’s my understanding of it. I don’t know if I’d risk doing any gas work if I wasn’t registered though.

I’m aware that customers don’t have to be registered if they are doing work for themselves, but ‘wsts’ refers to “a local fitter is known of by CORGI apparently for working on gas as part of his business while not registered“. Surely that can’t be right? 😕

    TBH I don’t know.

So far as I was aware you had to be CORGI registered to trade if your business concerned gas appliances.

Me too! Why would we pay the reg fees etc if it wasn’t a legal requirement? I will have to call my local inspector tomorrow and ask the question!

Do you have to be corgi registered just to work on gas cookers repair and fitting new ones? as was told that i could just do a CCN1 assessment and then CKR1 assessment.. Anyone can shred any light on this as dont wanna waste loads of money getting corgi if dont need it..

Tony unless you have a lapsed qualification in gas or a refrigertaion ticket forget it ,The only way otherwise is through a proven body of evidence that you can present to a training centre that is signed off by a registered operative that says you have done a set amount of solely gas work and have the job sheets to prove it .

Thats what was thought by us but apparently prosecution is hard if the operative has done everything expected of him, you cant say somebody is incompetent or dangerous if they are fitting appliances/boilers to standards….. we are not happy.
