Hi.
I`ve done loads of these over the years and tried all sorts of methods.
The best is to ask the user to help……….but only if its a she and is blonde and fit as she has to get close…….. what!!.
Nowt wrong with that….it makes up for the damage to your hands

Find these no problem but need the assistance of two paper tissues!
Place spring into seal at 12 oclock and wedge in place with tissue between seal and concrete, streach spring around seal to about 5 oclock and jam in second tissue.Fitting rest of spring then easy with two hands to streach it into place.Whooaaa. Cooking with Electric (not a Corgi) man 🙂
Tried this method today and……..thirty seconds.
Old dogs and new tricks spring to mind 8)Thanking you.

I wrote earlier in this forum how I had no problem fitting Zanussi door retaining springs but yesterday I had to fit a door seal to a BEKO, bigger seal than the Zanussi and could not fit the spring on, nearly got it on then off it came then I remembered what Bryan and r600a said about the screwdriver through the door interlock latch plate worked like a treat 1st time thanks for a good idea guys (see you can still teach a old dog new tricks)

The worst door seal I’ve had to fit recently are the Indesit ones with the tub weight all the way round and the stupid 3 loop clamp band that requires a special tool. It took me and the customer 40 mins to get it on.

Ah, sweet irony – I don’t re-use the clampband; I fit a Zanussi gaiter spring instead…………..

I too got fed up with sore fingers so I decided to make a tool for the job….
Use a 200mm x 8mm standard slotted screwdriver.
Gas torch.
Hammer and vice.
Safety goggles and gloves.
Suitable fire extinguisher.
Open space or well ventilated workshop.Firstly, using suitable heating equipment (I used my refrigeration oxy-propane torch) heat the end to red heat then insert into a partially open vice and pull the handle down to bend the end at about 30 degrees.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/cl … n/bent.jpgThen begin to reshape the blade end with a hammer (reheating as neccessary to red heat). Flatten the taper off a bit first which actually widens the blade a bit, then fold down the edges of the blade by hammering over a former. I found an old 1/4″ drive extension bar to be perfect. Once the fold begins this can be increased by hammering on the side of the blade to about the right size.
Finally, with a flat blade file and a small round file the end can be finished off nice and smooth with a neat half-round section with a diameter slightly larger than a standard Zanussi clamp band.http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/cl … unded3.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/cl … n/side.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/cl … nished.jpgUse of the tool is simplicity….simply fit about of a third of the band onto the door seal as normal, then using one hand to hold the band in place at one side locate the tool on the band using one finger to hold it against the shaft of the tool. Run the tool around the door seal in one swift movement (letting the band slip through the finger holding it against the shaft).
Finally stand back, admire your handywork and bow to the applause! 😆If anyone wants more details then just PM me….

I for one at least am very impressed at your ingenuity and am convinced (partly at least) at its viability as THE tool for the job
However, I would like to see it ‘in action’ as it where before I commit one of my own screwdrivers to the ‘anvil & flame’ treatment 🙂
Whilst it gets over the likelyhood of sore fingers perhaps, the main problem getting the spring on is usually the need for 3 hands, one to hold the spring in place, another to stretch the spring around the seal and the third to finally flick it into position!
So using your method then and meanwhile, I can keep my third hand free for supping tea – brilliant 😀

I use a bit of wood of the right thickness, about 10″ long. I also cut a notch in it at about 7″ back from the end. (I don’t know the exact dimensions because I can’t find it at the mo.)
The notch fits over the lip of the cabinet thus the bit of wood not only holds the spring in place but also holds the complete drum assembly away from the cabinet saving me having to bend my wrists back so far. -
