mjk8, you may have qualifications but it would appear absolutely no sense or tact whatsoever. In fact, you serve as an advert to others that having some letters after your name somehow entitle you to become a prat that feels that they’re somehow better than everyone else.
Frankly, you’re insulting my intelligence with your obviously provocative posts.
I’d like to know who you think that you are to judge anyone’s capabilities or skills.
However, since you’ve obviously got a chip on your shoulder and think that you’re so smart here’s the dictionary definition of an engineer…
1. One who is trained or professionally engaged in a branch of engineering.
2. One who operates an engine.
3. One who skillfully or shrewdly manages an enterprise.Note that there’s no mention of any specific qualifications required, nor of any particular mention of the level of intelligence required for one to be condsidered an “engineer”.
It is a generic term, not a specific.
Now go away and annoy someone else please.

Hi All,
I have to agree with Mike here..Sorry guys.
I’m a Mechanical Engineer IMechE with masters degree qualifications and many years of training to gain entry to the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
I think Mike may have been abrupt with the way he has put his point across, but he is correct in what he says regarding engineer status in Europe & UK.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Dave

Define a branch of engineering. If you bother to look the word up you’ll discover that it encapsulates many professions, not jus the ones that you choose.
The second one blows your stupid argument out the water as, by inference, you would have to suggest that to have the moniker of “engineer” attached that a ship’s engine technician, operating person or whatever you choose to call them goes and earns a BSc and joins the Institute. I wonder what the Royal Navy will think of that argument.
Or a computer/network type person, train engine techy type person…
The list is long of places where people with your opinion feel that the term “engineer” has been misused and that’s just the point, it’s your opinion and nothing more with no substance at all.
That aside I never much cared for institutions and I should hazard that you joined the wrong one.
On the last point you are totally wrong. Many of the people on here run their own business as well as being in the field. Last I heard that would fit with managing an enterprise.
You obviously haven’t a clue about this industry yet feel the need to snipe and cast aspersions without just cause or good reason that I can see. And, by having no knowledge of the industry you have no idea of the capabilities of the people within it, you merely have an opinion.
If you feel so strongly about it why don’t you contact the Institute and ask them to voice their concerns to me directly, I will gladly answer any questions that they may have. Or is that too much I wonder?
I also see that you have an issue holding a debate without resorting to using profanity, which you have now done of two threads. Had you bothered to read the site T&C or forum rules you may have noticed that that is banned, obviously you did not do so. And, whilst this is reason enough to kick you off, for your trolling and insulting posts I feel it’s far betetr to let you contiue and let you make more of a fool out yourself which, I have to tell you, you’re making a grand job of.

Whats’ this, the “engineer” gang?
Dave did you bother to read the dictionary definition or not?
There is NO requirement in law or in any other way that for one to be labelled an “engineer” that any minimum standard has to be met. Now you guys may feel that you’re better than everyone else but that does not in any way give you copyright on the term.
Until you can prove otherwise please drop it.

KeymasterOh sorry, I mean to point out to the audience that Dave_P joined and within a few minutes he’s posting to this thread and just happens to be another qualified engineer.

Indeed, the nerve of some people to come on here insulting hard working guys that are trying to actually help people, unlike you. They’re just such bad people aren’t they these washing machine engineers.
