With respect to all. I had the same problem. Most people have pointed to the main oven thermostat as THE cause. It’s not necessarily that. It’s easy to test your thermostat:
The heat sensing part of it is situated inside the oven, top left corner at the back wall. No need to remove to test. When cool, the on-off knob (front panel – Right) if you turn it, you hear a click early on, about 1 – 2 o’clock.Turn knob to off. Heat the sensor by pointing a hot hair drier or candle or lighter flame under it. after a couple of minutes or so, try the knob again. If you hear the click further down, 3 – 4 O’clock position, it means it’s sensing the higher temperature, therefore there’s nothing wrong with your thermostat.
Move the oven half way out and open the top plate. You’ll see a Capsule shaped item, 1 inch long with 4 wires coming out of it, two white & two blue, connected to the left hand selector, PCB and the grill extractor fan motor. This is OVEN THERMAL CUT OUT Part No. 3872079029. If you see it’s discoloured to dark brown, it’s burnt and needs replacing. I found the cheapest on Ebay (item 310237170627) for £11.94 + 95p P&P. Very easy to replace.
NOW; the reason it’s overheated, it means something has caused it. Is the fan working? Mine does not, no matter how long I leave the grill on. I checked the live & neutral poles, showing power is getting to it, but why is it not working?
There is a small thermal switch (which is a type of thermostat) screwed to the top of the oven (left of the central fan) and is wire connected to the fan. This is supposed to switch on when the top element (grill) gets too hot and start the fan. I assume if this is faulty, no matter how hot, the fan won’t start to do it’s job.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? ANY FEEDBACKS?
Does anyone have any idea what this little thermal switch is called and where it can be purchased?

If you click on shop@ on the L/H side of the page, then Cooker parts, then Electrolux & have a look at part number: 8996619267611 Oven cooling fan control.
This may be the part your looking for.February 13, 2011 at 6:18 pm #151256Zeperti

No, unfortunately the item you’ve referred to is The OVEN THERMAL CUT OUT Part No. 3872079029. It’s not that small thermal switch (which is a type of thermostat) that I’m looking for. Cheers.

Thanks for the lesson in what a Thermal switch is, but after over 30 years in the Electrical / Appliance industry it really was’nt nescessary.

Dear friend,
I would never doubt your knowledge and experience. All I said, respectfully, was that the item you kindly mentioned was exactly the one I had purchased via Ebay, which is already fitted but has not cured the problem of non running top fan.I’ll appreciate it if you (or anyone else) could let me know what that tiny thermal switch is called and how I could get hold of one. As you’d appreciate, it’s not possible to look for something unless we know what that item is called or it’s part number.
I really appreciate your kind replies, and sincerely hope you did not take offense. Thanks once again.

Is the item your looking for a small round unit with 2 terminals?

Yes exactly. Do you know what it is called or Part Number for it?
In your opinion, could this be the reason for the top ventilating fan not coming on?

Hi: I just re-read your original post, you should not be doing live testing on an appliance. However as you say you have 240v to the fan terminals then the fan should run, if you do have 240v to the fan terminals as you said then the next thing to do would be to carry out a continuity test across the fan motor coil.

Hi
I wonder if any one more knowledgeable that I could advise me.
Our electrolux oven had the same issues as in this thread (cutting out when too hot, fan staying on constantly). I had already narrowed it down to the ‘capsule’ shaped sensor but didn’t worry too much as I found for the temps we used (and grill) it still worked.
Eventually the fan went from staying on for extended periods, to staying on permanently (so we’d switch it off at the box after use to prevent it driving us mad).
Then one day during baking something the oven seem to to stop working.
The grill still works, the controls still work, the thermostat appears to work (I can heat the oven up with the grill then get the on/off click/light to respond to the temp rise/drop so that appears correct) BUT the main oven itself will not heat up. No matter what temp you set it to (and of course with the timer all set correctly so as not to prevent it) the oven refuses to even start getting warm.
So my question is (as I’m about to order a new cut out sensor, having removed the blackened old one that was definitely burnt out and dead) will replacing just this part likely enable the main oven to start heating up again (I.e is it a safety measure when it fails to prevent the main oven working) OR does it sound like the main oven element is dead and I’ll also need a new one of those (saw them online for around £20 so not too bad).
I know I’ll find out myself when I fit the new sensor if the oven works or not but while i’m buying if someone believes the element has gone based on the above description, I may as well buy one of those too.
Thanks

Hi: From the fault description you’ve given, I would buy the replacement sensor first & fit it. No point spending on an Element now as you may well not need to replace it, if you have a Multimeter you can check the Element for continuity to prove the point.
PLEASE REMEMBER POWER OFF & PLUG OUT, before opening things up.
Getting :zap: can seriously ruin your day.February 16, 2011 at 3:42 pm #151264polysixx

Thanks, I do have a multimeter. And the power is off (the fuse removed from the box) before I did anything, I don’t mess with the old leccy. 😉
Now I guess I just have to discover where the element is (And access to it).
thanks, hoping it is just the sensor.

Glad to hear you have a healthy respect for Electricity, too many people treat it with contempt. Please let me know how you get on.

Well, I repair vintage synthesizers as a ‘hobby’ for many years, so I’m not your average oven problem consumer, I guess that helps. 🙂 Thanks again.

hmm fitted the new sensor. Fan appears to work properly now but still no oven heat. So the answer for future readers is, the SENSOR itself being bad doesn’t seem to stop the element/oven working (if no heat then check thermostat and element rather than thinking it’s only/just the sensor). 🙂
gotta order that now.
Am I right in thinking the element is at the back of the oven behind the fan?
Thanks
