    Re: Forum Format Change

Bloody hell that was fast. 😉

It’s only one line of text Chris and it is only there when the forum is sponsored, which increases the desirability of sponsorship which funds some of the stuff we do. We have to get income from somewhere in the end.

The Amazon links, if they’re used, generates revenues for the subscribers, not UKW.

I’m hoping that it will encourage others to join is as well and we had to pay money to get the code done for it as well.

    Ho! Ho! Ho!

Trevor (the bot) is having fun right now tweaking with our signatures and stuff this Christmastide, clever stuff indeed 😉

I have to say I don’t like the idea of what I formally considered was my own private space being denigrated with what Chris so eliquently describes as….SPAM! 🙁

One good thing has come out of this though in that it has since dawned on me that if this can be done, so too can someone else read our PM’s I suspect?

    …..maybe I’m just having an Epiphany ❓

    Or perhaps being dumb. 😉

Your signature is entirely unaffected, it’s gotten sod all to do with that. It’s a little bit of code in the PHPbb code that inserts a tagline at the end of each post from the forums admin panel. What on Earth made you think that it was anything to do with your account?

And, frankly I’m a bit dismayed that you’d even think that given my sentiments on privacy anyways.

However the crux of it is that UKW is no longer just my own personal hobby and the intent was ALWAYS to sell advertising space to pay for it all, if you look back you’ll probably find posts where I have actually said so. Every other site of the same ilk has to do so as well as, the rental for the new server’s rackspace is £200 a month, plus maintenance. Quite simply that has to come from somewhere and I don’t see why the people that help on here for free should pay for it.

ACH, just one little project, will cost in excess of £24,000 this year alone.

The cost of ISE is, shall we say, substantial. Little leave behind leaflets alone (only 5000) are costing nearly £2000.

So you might not like advertising, I don’t particularly like it either, but it is the only way that we can generate the funds required to move forward with many projects. If I can take money from rich marketing departments and pump it back into the independents then that’s exactly what I always set out to do Dave, Kevin and Sean all agree with this and there’s been no arguments at all when it’s been mentioned in the past.

So unless someone has a load of cash that they want to invest…

Any chance of using an alternative font or at least another line so it appears different to what we have written so it doesnt look like our own personal recomendations?

Given UKW’s new commercial standing, we look forward to being paid for future articles 😉

I can italicise the lettering but that’s about it as it’s controlled by the CSS style, I’ll do that as that’s a good idea. I’ll do the rest later when I can be bothered. 😉

I wish I got paid for articles I write as well. 😕 😉

Thanks for that Ken. Well perhaps I will leave the subject for now as I sense an air of frustration in your response at this time. 😉

No Martin, not frustrated at the responses if they were balanced and objective. I was frustrated at teh attitude, esecially the shoot first policy with the critisism that you adopted without first asking why or how.

Very unlike you but nonetheless annoying.

    Re: Forum Format Change

Sorry folks, I got a bit miffed at the brutal response from Martin.

It’s really is as simple as I said, we have to generate funds from somewhere to keep doing what we’re doing and expanding UKW as we have been doing as well as funding things that are to the benefit of all we hope. Advertising on UKW is something that we can sell to allow us to partially do that. What we recieve in advertising revenues now wouldn’t even pay the wage for one admin staff, but it does allow us a little more to invest where we hope it will reap benefits for us all.

Sorry, but that’s life and it’s the way it is… we need money to do stuff and I can’t find anyone to give us it for nowt..

Well may I just explain that as these taglines were within the signature area I assumed (wrongly as it turns out now) our personal signatures were being accessed somehow by Trevor? And if signatures could be accessed then PM’s could be likewise? I haven’t a scooby doo after all as to how these work so my confusion was complete and total. 😕

Perhaps it would be prudent at this point for me to formally apologise to you Ken for my posting on the subject? I’m sorry you took it so personally as it was not directed at you at all! And with the benefit of hindsight, maybe I was a little hasty and harsh to air my thoughts so offhandedly without first asking about the implications? But in my defence and at the time I only added to Chris’ first observation at seeing what he considered spam and Mark mentioning ‘pay per future articles’???

Did you actually see what Trevor had written at the time of my first posting on these so called tag-lines (the Ho! Ho! Ho! bit he wrote) I wonder?

    Ah no matter!

In future I will use this smilie (my smilie) more often in the hope my comments will not be judged too harshly by anyone! :martin:

    Meantime…..sorry Ken! 😉

    Re: Forum Format Change

Thnaks Martin and I did see what Trevor had written. He was messing about here as he knew it was only seen by us and not by the general population to ensure that it worked.

I have changed the taglines to italics, good idea from Mark there and it differentiates it a litttle.

It’s not SPAM IMO as it is related to the sponsorship of the forums, often by companies that are supporting UKW in other ways or, as in the case of the Amazon links, adding to the subscribers pot. I don’t see that as being unfair at all.

You also don’t know just how much of our own money we’ve pumped into various projects already to benefit others as well and, thanks, but I’d like a little bit of my cash back and to make UKW and projects ongoing and sustainable. 😉

Then you probably understand now why I got my knickers somewhat in a twist over it at the time. Fair enough mate and enough said on the subject I reckon. 🙂

Peace be unto you brother, may you make heap big money 😉

I hope Kevin and Sean don’t see that as they’re always raggin’ my ass about giving stuff away for free or next to it. 😉

    Re: Forum Format Change

Just another point, supposing members here, for example the bloke from Masterpart does some posting, will he not be a bit miffed at having an advert for Qualtex, for example, on the bottom of his posts? just a thought.
