Great response martin as ever, wind people up, spout nonsense then leave.

Here’s my take on it for someone that does live in the area. During what I would call busy times I’d expect to be doing 9/10 calls every day. At the moment I’m probably doing an average of 6/7 a day. Recently for the first time in 4 years I increased my prices and have not had one complaint but even with the increase it’s still hard to make a good living out of it. Main problem for me is when people expect you not to charge if you can’t repair their appliance and that scenario seems to happen more and more. I’ve been down the route of selling appliances which only affect was to put me over the threshold and have to register for vat, hence the reason I’m no longer interested in sales, taking on extra help etc

I cant see how anyone can make a decent wage and still stay under the vat threshold?

The threshold is £81k. So it’s not hard to stay under and still make a living. I could quite easily take on more work by selling and taking someone on but like I’ve said before so long as it pays the bills I don’t have a problem. Work to live never live to work
But that’s just my philosophyMay 30, 2014 at 1:35 pm #414234DrDill

You don’t make sense Andy, you say when you are busy your doing 9/10 calls a day, but at the moment you are doing 6/7 calls a day, you stated:-
finding it hard to make a decent living out of it.
so for me if we take your labour as being £35 per call and you do 6 a day that’s 6 x 5 (days in a week worked) = 30, 30 x £35 = £1050 per week x 48 weeks = £50400, now that’s not a poor wage!! that’s 4 weeks off a year, no weekend work and only 6 jobs a day, practically part time.
Like I say dosnt make sense to me, I would take a yearly wage of £50k

First of all that would be turnover not a wage also you’re assuming 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} first time completion which for an independent is almost impossible. Trying to keep a decent van stock is imperative but there are a lot of second visits to fit spares. I don’t work weekends and haven’t for a few years.

I have also assumed only 6 calls, no allowance for parts mark up, and if just half the year you did your 9/10 calls a day that would cover your expences, which as you say are very low as you work from home and only employ yourself.
Also I have assumed £35 labour, what do you charge? then do the figures, something dosnt add up.May 30, 2014 at 1:54 pm #414237Andy jones
ParticipantRe: Is it just me or is anyone else quiet?
Again you are assuming every call I go to is chargeable. I won’t charge twice if I need to go back to fit spares. I’ve not said I don’t make a living
I’ve said it’s getting harder year on year which for me is correct. Even for someone self employed the overheads still take a fair chunk out of turnoverMay 30, 2014 at 2:00 pm #414238Andy jones

And it’s not just the financial side that’s making it harder, not sure what it’s like where you are but around Exeter the travel time has extended considerably, traffic levels seem to be at an all time high, customers seems to be more demanding than they where 10/15 years ago so the whole package is what’s making it more chalenging

Well there is your answer, tighten up on your recalls, carry more spares to achieve a higher first time fix, then profits will be better.
You actually said you find it harder to make a living
You didn’t say what your charge is?

logistics your problem now? heres our typical day, 1st call in newquay, 2nd in truro, 3rd in redruth, 4th in hayle, 5th in st ives, 6th in penzance, 7th in helston, 8th in Falmouth, then back to shop. Work that travel out then throw in the tourists!!
I think your just joining the “isn’t it quiet bandwagon” when actually your doing ok.

So you try to have a decent chat to someone then get accused of lying.

Hey Doc! Your web site link on the WTA website doesn’t work. I don’t know if you’ve noticed a drop in business because of it? I do hope not. 😀

On that note I will leave it there,
