Hi Bazza500 & Jackal,
Thanks for the heads up.
What do you recommend? Needs to be quiet, stackable, decent warranty and max Β£1,000.

Mmmm.Seriously though, I was really looking forward to getting the ISE. I like the business model – Service Engineer supported and all that. I’m no real fan of the corporates and was reluctant to go the Miele route having read many of the postings on this forum. It’s just a real shame about the things mentioned earlier in this thread. Next preferred option is John Lewis as a vendor, mainly because of their excellent customer service. I know I’ll likely have to put up with poorer reliability but this has to be traded with peaceful nights in order to benefit from the electricity cost saving.
I’m really interested to see what those in the know recommend in addition to ISE.

Hi David
I did a lot of research and for me it came down to a Miele W5740, which I was able to source from a known name supplier for Β£850 delivered, or the new ISE10 for Β£925 delivered AND installed and old item removed. You may have seen some of my posts, it took me a while but I decided on the ISE10 and I am pleased I did. But if that did not work out for you then the Miele seems the next best bet, especially if you get it before the end of the year as you will qualify for the 10 year promotion. No idea how noisy they are mind. I find the ISE10 fine, it is by no means silent on a 1600 spin, but is as smooth as you like.
Note that I donβt know if Miele would offer much support for stacking of a non Miele dryer on top of their washer, but I am only a punter. I do see they sell a stacking kit for Β£40 but apart from that canβt really comment further

(The ISE dryer that is made to match their washer comes with a stacking kit included).

Thanks Jaunty.
Miele W5740
I’ve had a very good look at this one. According to John Lewis, stacking is not a problem. The warranty is great. There’s only one thing…
Weirdly, there’s no start delay on this model (negating the Economy 7 possibility), though there is on their models positioned either side in price. However, the others are only given a 5 year guarantee.
Otherwise …

Hi dave,
Hope you’re not ‘blessing’ me for asking now :rolls:
I know i am straying a bit again π³ but what time does economy 7 ‘come in to play’ nowadays and is it still actually half price electricity?
Unfortunately i cant recommend a washer any better the the 1607, mine is not noisy and i and my son (who sleeps directly above it!) sleeps through any washes that i put in at bedtime (not for cheaper electricity, but often do it this time of year for drying purposes). Miele are a good quality but have you read my recent post on the general forum under heading ‘fair trading office’. I definitly would not get a miele unless it has the 10 year guarantee thats for certain (well i wouldnt get one at all as i will never to straying from the ise path for another washer and that wont be any time soon π ) thats the only recommendation i can give you i’m afraid.
good luck, hope you find something suitable for your needs

Not a bad explanation of it here:
http://www.uswitch.com/gas-electricity/economy-7/
Bottom line, you’re unlikely to save much unless you switch a huge chunk of your electricity use to a time when most people are asleep and, if you use outside this then power will cost you more.
It’s the old school version of SmartGrid basically which is a lot dumber. Another thing that, for a huge number of people, will probably be next to useless but a lot of folk will think will make them mammoth savings on power costs when it probably won’t.
But I don’t get why people do this as it’s good advice never to leave appliances completely unattended and running in case something goes wrong. Having the house burned down or flooded isn’t worth a few pence on the electricity bill IMO.
Neither SmartGrid, Eco7 or any other tariff makes the machine/s use less power, they just balance the load for the power company and that allows them to pass on a saving for using off-peak power. They are not “green” in any way that I can see.

Helpful advice Ken. We’ve been using E7 for years and maybe it doesn’t make as much sense as we thought.
I’m not sure I altogether buy the ‘appliances on at night’ argument as so many have to be on – fridges, freezers, boilers etc – though there does seem a bit of evidence (Hoover) washing machines can cause fire.
I guess the start delay button matters less now.
Still undecided on the new machine.

I would love Economy 7 over here on the island but we still have to pay the full 15.6 pence per KW whatever the time of day !!

hi,
I remember a lady in my street years ago doing her cooking at night π―
Like joints of meat, casseroles etc, i said to her ‘arent you worried about the cooker catching on fire’ she replied ‘oh well i will be dead then and wont know about it!’ All just to save a few pence on the electric! :rolls:
Anyhow dave, with the larger drum capacities of the newer machines you should be able to save on electricity by not doing a lot of small loads. the newer machines are susposed to use less anyhow.
I would definitely not let the lack of a delayed start sway me from a 10 year guarantee if you decide on a miele, thats for certain. There really arent any other quality machines available IMHO. I had 2 years to look into it and came up with miele (but didnt want them really!) and then i discovered ISE (thank heavens and washerhelp π ) All through the 2 years of saving and trying to get the most out of my old machine, i checked out the ‘competition’ and came up with ‘zero’ The 2 year thing was to my advantage in the end as the timing panned out right when the new 1607 model was being introduced π
Ken, thanks for the link. Ever the fountain of knowledge π
Best wishes and merry christmas to all
