    Re: Names

Personally speaking Martin i’m right with Ken on what he has done so far….i like his ideas for the TA and i know he’s got the ‘zip’ to get things done. My ‘go for it’ remark is a reflection in the confidence i have in Ken, his stated ideals and motivation for moving this forward in the direction it is going, and i for one fully realise the time commitment that man has given on this alone.

No, i can’t be at the meeting in september (my business partner has the bare-faced cheek to get married and go on honeymoon leaving me to hold up the bricks and mortar!) but i wish i could if only to hear the views from others in person.

What has suprised me a little is the lack of others who have voiced their opinions lately and i suspect it’s for the same reasons…they too are perfectly happy with the stated aims for a TA as they stand, and they too have their faith in Ken and the way he works.

As to ‘rolling up sleeves’ i’m there too waiting for the call as it were…i personally don’t know the ‘movers and shakers’ in the business, but the TA as it is becoming is something i fervently believe is necessary, well over due in fact, and i’m prepared to make commitments in time and effort to see it happen. (Ken please take note)

I hope you will be at the meeting Martin as i would like to hear your views as well as others, and i’m looking forward to reading the minutes of what i’m sure will be a healthy and productive debate. I’m quite sure that any organisation like this starts with a few ideas from a few people, and once the germ has been formed it’s then that the work begins 😉

    Re: Names

As much as I’d like to take the credit for a lot of what’s been done and maybe even written, it’s not really mine in many ways. It is in fact distilled comment from the trade as a whole with, perhaps, a little slant and spin of my own interwoven.

The simple fact of it is that there is a handful of people, if that, that could write the stuff that needs written and then, the number lessens with those that can carry that agenda forward. I can name a few that have the ability to do so other than me.

My problem is my inability to keep my mouth shut. 😆

I haven’t really worked my socks off Martin, I’ve done a few hours where and when I can as I always do. I basically prioritise different projects and stuff I’m doing dependent on the need at the time or, more often than not, when I get wound up about something. Fact is, when I feel like writing (or typing) something I just get on with it and get it off my chest. Often that means someone has royally p1ssed me off not to place too fine a point on it and, in many cases, that means that they’ve p1ssed me off because they want to hurt or misuse the indies IMO and in my view of things.

I do get a tad passionate about it all. 😕

But here’s my take on how it has to go…

I think that at Sibson we should be in a position to discuss the future, not the here and now really. I think that the voting and stuff should all be done and dusted. By the time that Sibson rolls round we should basically be ratifying the constitution and forming the first elected steering committee, not faffing about.

We can do most of it here on UKW without mucking about with meetings taking up people’s valuable time.

Don’t get me wrong, face-to-face meetings have their place and they are important, but in this day and age I don’t see the requirement to ask people to lose days of work and valuable income when much of what we need to do can be done in an evening over the internet with little or no impact on people’s business.

At the end of the day the WTA is there to fight the repairer’s corner, end of story. When we lose sight of that it’s time to call it a day.

However, until that happens, I’ll do what I can to help and, since I would appear to have this “gift” for being a gobby SOB, I’ll just crack on until I’m told to shut the f**k up which I’m sure will happen in time when people are sick of listening to my opinions. As soon as this happens I’d appreciate a gentle nudge to exit stage left BTW.

I’ve no issue with putting in a few hours work, a bit of graft doesn’t scare me even if I have to put some thought and work into it.

So, what about a mailshot then? And, no, I’m not kidding.

    Re: Names

Martin have no fear, if there’s one thing I know for an absolute fact, its that Ken knows how to delegate. I dont think there is a county left in the whole UK that I havn’t been to or passed through on one of his assignments.

Dave Conways house is beginning to look more like an industrial estate than a residential property. If anyone needs info or parts the guy is practically open all hours.

Even your own kitchen was used as a test lab for the first ISE which you did a crackin’ job on re-writing the ‘USER MANNUAL’ for.

Remember we know the bugger, some of our new voulenteers don’t. The only thing Ken needs from people is to ‘Say what they mean’ and ‘Mean what they say’.
    The rest is just logistics.

    Re: Names

When I first read Martin’s last post I thought little of it. But on reflection, he is absolutely right.
Sibson will be the start for the TA coupled with the delegation of everyone’s role and to that end everything will become clearer. I have thought hard about the precious spare time I have with my 4 children – and the possibility of the TA using some of that up – but I am willing to input what I can for the greater good of this trade. (And the possibility that one of my sons may join me in a few years).
When Sean and Rob came to Poole for the detergent training session and the introduction of the new ISE – I was quite suprised at the disdain that certain people demonstrated with regard to their own industry. (and the ISE – “uhh, s’only a Beko…. hate their door boots – …….:rolls:) This was an extra line of business after all: at least someone is trying. There seemed a resistance to change and the feeling of “well, it pays the bills, don’t it” that this trade suffers from IMO. Hopefully the TA, through a sense of purpose and direction can steer the industry main players (manufacturers and WP’s) to reciprocate the good work that us indies do.
We are all individually respected within our customer base and area: but not in the media and the ‘choice of career path’ at the colleges in this country. I would be ashamed if I didn’t give my son and others like him a chance to make a good living from this trade by my lack of action. Machines aren’t going to fix themselves – they’re not getting any more reliable, so this trade has a future if it wishes to grasp the nettle and make it a good one. As Martin says, it will take time and effort from the few to help the many. Can it be achieved? Well, things need to change, don’t they? Now is the time for the trade to take this opportunity to unite as they have on UKW – this alone shows it can be done.

    Steve.
