I am amazed that there is no longer any protection behind the kick strip on Merloni/Hotpoint dishwashers. Laying on the floor with the door open, it is very easy to put your hand into the base cavity. There are live terminals there! Is it just time before someone gets a nasty shock. It will only take a child trying to recover a lost toy!!!

In my days as a design engineer for an electric motor company, we had a ‘British Standard Finger’ to test access to moving components and live terminals. There is no way these machines will past the test.

Does UKW have any way of contacting the manufacturers when a safety issue like this is brought to light?

The Indesit Company do read the site Bob, whether they actually do anything about the issues raised is something entirely at their own discretion.

First I’ve heard of this Bob!

To what models specifically do you refer to anyway I wonder :con:

I am sure this is not the case with these dishwashers and I think the old law about not being able to reach a live part without using a tool still stands. I reckon the plastic covers behind the kickplate, (itself retained by screws and plastic claws) must have been missing on the one you saw Bob.

I will post at least one model number and serial number tomorrow. I have seen several machines though, including slimline versions.

I just thought… Perhaps any power is isolated by the door switch whilst the door is open.

    Hi Bob

Your right the standard is BS EN 60335 -1 1999

It doesn’t matter if the door isolates the power, the fact remains that live terminals are accessible, that door switch could very easily fail???

Not sure what clause it is will have to look in the standard in my other office.

If this is the case and a they are making these without this protection, they could end up with a nast recall or worst case somebodys death on there hands.

I really hope they do read these pages.

The last one I saw was yesterday. Hotpoint model DWT10 Serial No 24710601.

As I said it’s not the first I have seen.

Re: Safety Issue on Hotpoint Dishwashers

Without a model number, it is difficult. However, with current production, Hotpoint and Indesit freestanding models have plinths with insulation blocking off the two access panels. The plinth would have to be removed to get your hand in.

Integrated models would have the kitchen units plinth in the front and two blanking covers on the dishwashers. Again, a tool would be needed to remove the covers.

it’s difficult to comment without a model number but cannot think of any of Hotpoint or Indesit Dishwashers that have exposed connections and they have been checked and they all have a component shield .

The other worry is has the machine in question been repaired at some point and the covers left off!

Just to resurrect this thread, I called to an Indesit slimline dishwasher yesterday without any protection behind the kickstrip.

    Model D41UK S/n 306097250

This photo (sorry it’s a bit dark) was taken from the floor with the door open. This machine has never been worked on before.

Anyone else seen these? I’m beginning to doubt myself.

No Bob never spotted this anomaly before, good heavens! I will visit a local ‘shed’ this morning to see if I can spot and photograph others.

That should make for a good “REVIEW” expose’ πŸ˜‰

Strange, just checked on Partfinder on both the Indesit WD41UK & the Hotpoint DW10. Both diagrams show what appears to be a plate or a large piece of soundproofing, across the base, diagram ID number 32 on the Hotpoint & 43 on the Indesit but both parts are missing from the parts list???

    Seriously though…

I think the huge capacitors on the new Herloni washer’s modules could be a fatal problem for those DIY’ers out there. πŸ˜•

Re: Safety Issue on Hotpoint Dishwashers

True to my word I ventured into Comet’s superstore in Reading this morning and took these pictures of Indesit machines:

The machines in question are Indesit IDL500UK.2 and IDL530UK which feature at the lower end of the product range. The other models up the range have the same exposed front panel yet the have fibre sound insulation material immediately behind the baseframe.

Also in the same showroom was a full range of Hotpoint branded machines and they too were identical to the Indesit but ALL had the fibre insulation behind the baseframe. In ALL CASES one could easily reach inside (beyond the fibre insulation) and touch part or parts of the exposed wiring harness and certain in-line connector blocks!

These machine are all 60 cm models and I did not find any problems with the 45 cm (slimline) range in the showroom. πŸ™„

Now you may also be interested to know that I have reported my findings to the Reading Trading Standards Office, who will be investigating the matter in more detail. They will no doubt contact me in this regard and I will report back to you any developments πŸ˜‰

    Excellent work Martin.

This will cost them big time either in recalls or having to send an engineer to every one of these products sold to be rectified. I really wounldn’t like to be the designer 😈

All this to save a couple of pence per machine 😑 😯
