Stopper the drain hose and make sure it’s got lots of water in – it’s heavier when you go over the weigh bridge.

Not that I’d ever condone such a practice, of course.

What you guys have said so far confirms my suspicions of late anyway. In the country lanes around here the ‘fly tipping hotspots’ no longer contain whitegoods but just the usual house-clearing sofa’s, CRT TV’s and builders rubble!

    £85 a ton atm.

btw if you become known for stopping up the w.m. waste hoses, ur scrap value rapidly drops quite a lot.

however… i did know of a scrap guy who always used to manage to go for a toilet break (unnoticed) after his flat bed was empty. obviously having driven on and sat in the van whilst weighing in 😉

i know of a scrap man who filled a dishwasher with sand, after tipping all hes scrap got went through by the scrapyard and when they opened it and it spilled out they kicked him out the yard without a pennny and he cant use their yard no more!

I’m always a little nervous about visiting the scrap yard regularly as they have cameras and take your details each time you weigh in. Is anyone else here bothered about the possibility (however remote) of a visit from DEFRA asking for proof of WEEE compliance or waste carrier’s licence?

Steve. (probably worrying too much. :rolls: )

It matters little to anyone handing scrap over to a scrap yard as to what licence the scrap merchant holds. However, anyone operating as a business that sells scrap to any scrap merchant must have themselves a current ‘Waste Carriers Licence’ from the Environment Agency.

Steve (aqualectric) is quite correct in being concerned about taking scrap to any merchant without such a licence. If the Environment Agency catch you dealing in this way then you and your business are in deep doo doo!

It costs around £152 currently to hold a licence so for those of you wishing to sell old washing machines for scrap must factor that cost in first off. The licence has to be renewed each year by the way so lets hope the value of scrap metals keeps rising for your sake! 😉
