KeymasterDoes anyone know of a reliable, knowledgeable engineer who repairs SMEG A1 cookers in the Chichester, West Sussex area. I have been at the mercy of the nominated SMEG engineer who is frankly a joke and my cooker is still not repaired despite one year’s battle with SMEG.

Are you certain that it is an appointed Smeg service agent, appointed by the national agent Servevast you are having problems with ?
As far as I am aware, Smeg service is held in very high regard and there are very few issues.
What are the problems you are having ?
Dave.

KeymasterYeah, I’d agree as I’ve worked with Servevast for a few years with no issues at all really other than the odd part that’s taken a while from Italy. Even that’s very rare indeed these days.
Most of the guys that do Smeg repairs here do not have any issues at all with the appliances and if they do they are quickly resolved by Smeg or Servevast.
You can get Servevast on 0870 444 7002 and they will help you.

I read the replies to this laughing. I had a Smeg A42 and the rapid burner never stayed lit. It took nearly 2 years of complaining to Smeg before they finally sorted it out by replacing the thermocouple a different type which appeared to be longer and actually sat in the flame rather than near it..
One of the engineers came round, first of all said there wasnt a problem and then said he had fixed the problem unfortunately my wife couldn’t test it at the time but about an hour later the problem was back and we were never convinced they did anything. At the time we lived in Walberton so perhaps it was the same lot that came to Chichester (about 7 miles away).
The service centre for smeg was useless, I once spent best part of an hour on hold trying to get through to some useless bint who wasnt prepared to do anything. Eventually they extended the guarantee to 2 years but during this period when I complained to the MD all he said was that as my guarantee had run out they couldn’t do anything so much for the extension.
Now I would not only never recommend Smeg I would advise people against buying Smeg goods.

I agree on appalling Smeg service, and build quality – all the cash seems to go on marketing rather than engineering. I’m now replacing all the builder provided Smeg white goods with sensible German stuff.
Smeg are responsible for the only fridge problems I have ever had, a washing machine that nearly burnt down my flat & an extractor that barely extracts !!

The above somewhat disappoints me.
Smeg service is only as good as he appointed agent for the area, if you happen to be in a vicinity with poor cover, then you need to make it known to Smeg H.O. at Abingdon.
Regards the product, I can only speak as I find, I removed the Whirlpool rubbish as provided by my house builders within 2 years and replaced with Smeg.
O.K. You may not be talking Mercedes or BMW, but we aren’t talking Fiat either. I would say in the Alfa Romeo bracket, innovative and chic.
Of course, this is my opinion.

KeymasterI have to say, that after seeing a Bosch on sale for £250 in B&Q the other day, I’d have to agree.
No way that was a real German machine, looked like a Balay in disguise to me.

ParticipantBosch bought Balay years ago. If the washer’s under £300 or got an egg shaped access panel on the back it’ll be Spanish.
Still, better than Merloni……

I think most of the staff building Bosch Maxxs will be eating tappas for lunch rather than Bratwurst.
If its made in Germany it will proudly announce it on the front, if its not it will quietly mention made in the EEC on the back.

KeymasterI bought two SMEG ovens (one with a rotisserie) as a replacement for a twenty year old Creda with a rotisserie. Cost, almost £1,000 in a sale. The prongs on the rotisserie spit are so small that they will not hold the chickens I am trying to cook. The prongs illustrated in the user manual are much bigger. After battling with SMEG for ten months the only reply that we can get is that the rotisserie is to specification and that the chickens we are trying to cook are too big. The chickens are only about 1kg, it would be difficult to find a smaller bird. SMEG service at Abingdon is non-existent. I am sorry I changed, the timer on the Creda may have broken and the thermostat was playing up but it was ten times better than the SMEG.
I would recommend anybody to contact their local Trading Standards Office, they will advise you.

I must admit that altough we visit many ovens with the rotisserie feature, i dont know of anyone who actually uses it (maybe for this very reason) or buys it for that feature in the first place. Therefore I personaly have neve heard of such a complaint. Does it state in the spec the max weight that can be used? Post the model number and maybe on of us can look that up.
Your 20 year old creda may well have been better and stronger built but, not wanting to sound like an old person, nothing is made like it used to be and a current Creda or anything else in fact would be up to that standard either.

KeymasterRe: SMEG Repairs
As a repairer who is not an agent of Servevast I have found them to be poor, unreliable and not helpful for several years now. They obviously support their network better than independents. I also would never recommend Smeg appliances because of the crap service we get from the service back up.
As independents we have to source spares from the many varients of manufacturers who do the smeg appliance in disguise, how things have changed from the days of WAM, when the same guys who now run Smeg service were part of that set up.

i think smeg produts are over priced nice style but a middle of the range build ive had problems with aftersales in the past but this has improved i just think people expect higher quality for the price they pay for them
