My new found ‘friend’ 😳 Paul has asked me to look out for a Hotpoint 1600 for him, last time I saw one of those was at least 10 years ago. 😥
He has asked me to fill in some of the gaps on his spreadsheet, but come on, I only fixed the bloody things, I didn’t take the manuals to bed as reading material.
He is living in Derby ATM but hails from the Clitheroe area. This collecting and restoring old washers malarky is a joint venture with a friend of his who has a place in Crewe where they are all stored. Its a bit different to Philately and no mistake. 😆

Not sure exactly Mark but they came out in 1982-3. There are still a good few about and not surprisingly as they are build like brick out-houses.
I am the proud owner of one that was made in December 1984. It was given to me by a guy in Wokingham that owned delapidated hotel on the edge of town (end of Evendons Lane in fact). He was selling up at the time and offered all 3 of his Bosch w/m’s & 2 Bosch dryers for FREE! So each time I had a call in the Wokingham area I would pick one m/c up and take it home. I reconned all 3 w/m’s but the dryers were OK as they were. I sold all I had (except the one dryer) to a private old folks home in Silchester. The guy that owned the Wokingham Hotel sold the land and they have since build 60 or 70 huge houses and a golf course on that estate in Evendons lane. He must have made a bl**dy fortune on the deal so naturally giving me his laundry appliances was of little concern to him. To whom I’m eternally grateful of course. 😀
The remaining dryer still proudly works effortlessly in my utility room to this very day…………………….

That looks like the one my parents had back in the 1960’s my old man used to give me a thick ear for trying to poke my fingers in the rollers, mind you it was ok to beat your kids in those days 😀 .

Possibly early 50’s machine, would have the huge, separate BTH motor, doesn’t have a heater though.

Possibly Jim? It’s an Empress after all said and done. You and I have fixed loads of these babies in our time. Well speaking personally I have anyway. Mostly wringer problems with the automatic safety release mechanism playing up, worn out rollers, leaking pumps and oil seals on the gearbox leaking over the wringer drive shaft.
Yes indeed the 1950’s it was and 20 years later there were hundreds in my patch I must admit. Through my time at BDA Hotpoint (1970-73’ish?) I lost count of them and some were even daft enough to join the ‘Owners Club’ with them and we had to service them annually, though there was nothing ever needed servicing.
These days I’d find it so very hard simply lifting the wringer from it’s bottom storage cupboard and sticking on the wringer mount, they were that heavy!
Happy days!!!!!! 😀

Unfortunately you can’t split the tub to change the bearings unless you carry a brace and bit 😆
Bet they never go unlike nowadays.June 22, 2010 at 3:55 pm #309259robbra
ParticipantA blast from the past
Hi,
an existing customer with a Hitachi FW101B (Servis Quartz). Power card dead so went into my loft and found a few. Put one on and fine for 10 seconds then no pump. Took it off and found two dry joints after a lot of continuity testing and resoldered them, yes a repair rather than replace, whatever next. All working fine. I never thought they would come in handy after 21 years but one did. I charged her £55 for the lot as I reckoned rather than BER it I have kept and old classic going for a bit and got shot of a part I never thought I would.
I feel happy to have done that but also a bit of trace and repair. Takes me back to 1982 when I started with Servis after 10 years driving a London bus.

That is satisfying when it happens Rob, good to keep the old buggers going & shift a part which had grown roots.
Tried the same with an ancient Hotpoint 95 a couple of weeks ago, just needed an Armature & Brushes, spent ages explaining why it was worth hanging on to, arranged to call back in 48 hrs to complete the job..nice.She phones me the next day to say hubby had just suprised her with a nice present…a new Zanussi (gawd ‘elp them :rolls: )
Cant bloody win can we? However, the callout was sent to me for my trouble, and i remained very polite because i simply cant wait till they phone me in…oh… 2 to 3 years i’d say with rumbling bearings… and i’ll at least try not to look too smug :rolls:June 23, 2010 at 6:28 am #309261robbra

A bit optimistic by all accounts Mac. Your coffers may be swelled sooner than that 😉
Rob
Maybe you should tell them to keep the Hotpoint “just in case” 😀June 23, 2010 at 9:42 am #309262Madmac

Well that is true.. if its an entry level one with a sealed tub then anytime after 18 months seems to be borrowed time for ‘lux crap these days 🙁

Just fitted a base bracket and latch plate to a Humpit 9513, and a timer cam to a FL1022. They love their old machines they do 😀
