Just testing out a few, forget searching if you just want answers that include Hotpoint, Indesit or Whirlpool.
Edit:- plus Bosch or Zanussi.

If you enter Hotpoint+doorlock it will not search but if you enter Hotpoint +doorlock it will.
The trick is to leave a space after Hotpoint, problem with that is it brings up other doorlock posts as well. It still ignores Hotpoint but at least you get something to trawl through.

See, we all learned to use the last one (even though it wasn’t very good) and we’ll learn to use this one too. 🙂
The trouble is of course that no search is perfect when it’s confronted with words that are too common and that’s the problem on here, too much commonality so you need a string of words.
You could allow Google to index the trade forums but that opens up a huge, gaping security hole. On the upside, better search. 😕

The problem is that your string of words on this forum will inevitably include the manufacturer of the machine.
If your string is for instance Hotpoint +motor +arcing then Hotpoint is ignored and you get all posts that have motor and arcing including the Hotpoint ones.
The only way around that would be to put a – in front of every manufacturer that you could think of in your very long string. 😛 😆

the old search engine was good not great but saved myself and probably many others from going over previously covered faults,
the new search engine is not very good which will lead to duplicating common faults. i searched for ikea +frezer it ignored freezer so now i wil have to trawl through many posts or raise a new post.March 22, 2011 at 9:56 pm #346897kwatt

I’ve got a much better solution in mind but bear with me for a few months while I try to get it sorted out.
I agree it’s not the greatest search engine.

Hi,
Only just seen the new site so not had much time to look around.
Having trouble with the search engine, it was “intersting” before but now almost unusable. Still cannot search for LG as a make due to the three character restriction. Tried to search for hoover dishwasher fault codes and it chucks out hoover or dishwasher. Any pointers on how to use it would be great. I have found this site to be a life-saver in the past and 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of my use is in searching old posts.
Hopefully this will be resolved, i would pay to have an unrestricted search access to past posts.
Best Regards

I’ve tweaked the search parameters but, it’s pretty well known that most board search functions aren’t great and phpBB, which this is, is certainly not wonderful.
To improve it further and to reset the common words I need to get it to reindex all the posts which I’ll do over the weekend at night when the server is at it’s lowest in terms of traffic or it’ll slow down the site.
Meanwhile I am trying to find a modification to improve the search function but, as yet, I’m drawing a blank.

Just put a * after the “common” word like hotpoint* interlock*

But that only looks for words that are longer than hotpoint or interlock, eg hotpoints, hotpoint’s, hotpointwm, etc and won’t pick up hotpoint on its own!

A-Ha!
Cracked it!
If you type in hotpoin*, then it will complete the word and will list all entries with hotpoint in it.
Success!! 😀
Cheers,

simples, it works, now my next problem is how to get rid of the big section with the main menu part down the right hand part of the screen, when you scroll down the posts are stuck in 2 3rds of the left side of the screen and 1 3rd blank down the right hand side of the screen.

That won’t happen, its the new template, don’t worry, it may fill with advertisements etc, nothing is for free these days. 😉
TBH, I’m not that struck on it either, such a waste of space. 😥

Yes it is a bit of a waste of space. On a screen with a resolution higher than about 768-1024 pixels wide.
But that aside, it means that publishing things is just so, so much better as you can control how it looks way, way better than with a constantly variable width. But to do that you have to default to the lowest common denominator and consider the use of the site.
I’ve attached a screen grab of the partial first day’s screen resolution analysis and as you can see there’s the top ten options as far as screen resolution goes. There’s actually 127 in total.
It’s an absolute killer on the content side of the site, the display or more, how things are displayed, just has to be controlled. That spills over into the forums as well although there are things, as I’ve discovered, that can mess with it.
You just have to do the best you can. :rolls:
On the advert front, well yeah, I kinda have to do that as I need to cover the hosting costs. It’s an ugly part of the whole affair but, in order to keep this thing all running, pay staff, make stuff happen I sorta have to generate the funds to do that from somewhere. It’s a sad reality that has to be faced.
It is the intent however to only allow forum sponsorship in the trade forums but to do a wee bit more in the public ones but no more intrusive than any other forum out there. Filling the space as mooted with adverts is not even on the radar.
Hope that explains it.
