Hi all, quite fancy one of the large capacity washers and its down to a choice between 2…..

Daewoo DWDLD141KCS Direct Drive 9KG coming in at 379.95 OR

HOOVER DST10146P 10KG coming in at 499.99 (think this is direct drive as well?)

    Any suggestions chaps?

Neither of those for a start.

Check out the front page news here at UKWG’s the Hoover is actually a Candy. 😉

Daewoo a bit of an unknown quantity.

Why do you think you need a 9kg capacity when the average wash load in the UK is less than 3kg?

Unless you go for a better engineered product such as the new ISE1607 or a Miele, very large capacity machines are best avoided.

    Large capacity ??

Bloody hell, wasn’t sure about the Daewoo but Hoover – Barge pole, these guys give a 10 year warranty on that washer, surely that must count for faith in their product 😯

OK so those washers ain’t much cop – what I need is a washer that can cope with a 7 foot horse blanket, any suggestions on a machine?

    hi dusty321,

Does the hoover really have a 10 year guarantee, because when i was looking for a machine (i bought the ise10) the only one i could find with a 10 year guarantee was a miele (which i didnt want) and they only give 10 years when on promotion. 😕

Here is a review of that Hoover machine posted on a ‘Recommended washer’ web site.

I have had 3 of these machines in less thana week!!!!!! and costing over £550 you would at least expect 10 years, I can’t believe my luck, The first one did 4 loads of washing before it decided to die, took it back to the store I purchased it from, got a new one, it showed an error code at the end of the cycle E14. An engineer came out offered to replace parts, declined due to the fact that it was under 24 hours old when problem occured, a new machine was delivered and installed by hoover, they tested it which was fine, they left, I tried a load of washing, it died!!!, what can I say, I hope Hoover’s customer services bleep machine is working better than their very expensive washing/or sometimes washing machine is, I think I will get a cheap second hand machine from someone that is silly enough to upgrade to a Hoover DST10146P that will probably work for years without any hassle!!!!
    Rating: 1 out of 10.

Surely nobody would be mad enough to give a 10 year warranty on a current Hoover/Candy machine, have you got a link to that, all the sites I have looked at are 12 months only.

Perhaps you should change to a four foot horse, 😆

You really need a strongly built semi commercial machine to wash such things, not standard ‘domestic’ appliances, a huge horse blanket is not considered normal domestic laundry and could well invalidate any warranty in the first place.

If you have the room then a Whirlpool American top loader would be a better bet, several stables round here use them and to be honest I wouldn’t like my smalls washed in the same machine that had been used for horse blankets. :rolls:

    hi all,

I could only find 1 year also.

Personally, I would go for an ise10 all day long! The machines are built like tanks, built for longevity with a 10 year guarantee, but with a 20+ year lifespan and cheap parts after guarantee is out! 🙂

They may seem a bit expensive to start with but if the machine only lasted for the 10 years that would cost less than £1.80 per week! 😀

    kind regards

Yes iadom, i have seen those used in our local stables come to think of it. They might be easier to load with a big blanket than a front loader but i still rather have the ise10. 😉

Given the amount of water they use they are not really suitable for normal domestic use but for horse blankets etc they are ideal.

Re: What washing machine – help me decide……

I’m really glad that you gave the use of the machine, it helps a lot in recommending what’s suitable.

Horse hair and electric drain pumps do not usually make for good bedfellows. They will jam with it, drain hoses get clogged with it and most manufacturers will either disown the problem or tell you it’s commercial use then disown the problem.

Even on ISE the warranty would only be a commercial one. We see the machines used for veterinary surgeries and the likes a lot and it’s on a commercial footing due to the use.

However there is something that you should perhaps be aware of as it has been the subject of conversation for me of late for that very purpose. There has apparently been a bit of a crackdown by the water authorities looking to have dump valves fitted where this sort of use in required as well as a double check valve. The water people seem to think that these are required for safety and hygiene purposes with enforcement notifications being handed out.

I’ve not quite gotten to the bottom of what it’s all about but I suspect that it’s to do with washing things that have all sorts of animal “stuff” on them as well as owners or staff’s clothing or uniforms in the same machine. Bottom line, they don’t like it and are getting all huffy about it.

So, if this is in a commercial premises of any kind at all I’d strongly advise that you check out the legal responsibility side before you fall foul of any legislation. If you do, don’t say you weren’t warned.

If you do fall into that arena then you need a full blown commercial machine with a waste dump valve fitted that meets WRAS specification and you will struggle to find one under about £2K plus VAT.

The Whirlpool toploaders do not meet that specification.

Re: What washing machine – help me decide……

    hi dusty321,

Firstly i dont know if it is still possible nowadays, but if you only keep a horse/horses for a ‘family pet’ so to speak, then what we used to do was send our ‘horsey’ things off for laundering rather than use the machine at home. 🙂

We had one horse that was a ‘roller’ so we used the nylon topped type blanket that i regularly yard brushed! 🙁 This reduced the frequency of laundry episodes!!

Then, if it was possible to do this type of laundering nowadays, then you could own a fantastic ise10 with 10 years guarantee for your ‘home’ washing! Have a ‘read up’ of its features, the machine is simple for the user, but inside it features are pure genius!

    best wishes

Re: What washing machine – help me decide……

For dealing with this sort of thing I would recommend Ipso, fully commercial and industrial washers, thay have a dump valve on certain machines also.

My parents are looking for a new machine also for home use and are looking towards a JLA 5 or 6 (Schulthess built) or anything that would fit the gap in the kitchen. :rolls:

Re: What washing machine – help me decide……

From my vast experience in dealing with those ‘horsey types’ here in deepest Hampshire that wash not only horse blankets but pads, show blankets and all manner of horsey stuff opt for the cheap, easily replaced bottom end of the market product. Their logic being that at some time in the not too distant the machine is going to go AWOL. :rolls:

Now given the facts of the ‘average’ riding stable that has between 1 to 3 horses need to clean their ‘tack’ at least once a fortnight. Now with the ‘tack’ that’s bunged in the washer not only riddled with horsehair from their latest ‘hack’ but horse poo, straw, grit, sand, mud and all unmentionable debris hitherto unspecified. All of which is lumped together and stuffed into a washer without fear or favour.

From that fact try to decide what washing machine can cope with that? I have to say that the options suggested so far are quite bizarre. Whirlpool american top loaders are the most popular landfill ingredient around here. (My next door neighbour had one for 18 months – must be a record?) and to suggest the ISE10 is financial suicide toward a brilliant ‘domestic’ product (I wouldn’t go there pal).

Conclusive reply to Dusty321: Cheapo large capacity Hoover or maybe Whirlpool or even Zanussi? The only ‘must have’ is a drain filter. It just has to have a drain filter. Forget this all too confusing ‘dump valve’ stuff. Just go for a machine that has a user accessible drain filter. AND once in place and in use make sure you check and clean it after every wash or a least once a week. Do that and in all honesty, you can’t go wrong….trust me……40 plus years in the trade and loads of horseshoosh on my boots in that time…I know.
