    Re: Where’s everybody gone?

Yup, all there just a slightly different layout.

Personally I don’t think it’s as intuitive or as handy to use but I will bow to the will of users on the choices that are available. Can’t really do much more than that.

I might be able to convince Sudeep in a few weeks to hard code some of the links in a more easy to get at fashion but I’ve not got a clue how hard that would be or how much time it will cost and, I have him on another common gripe on here… search.

He’s on a course for the next two weeks to learn how to sort that problem which just is nowhere near as simple as most people presume. :rolls:

    Re: Where’s everybody gone?

Biggest problem with the layout is that it all seems to just ‘blend’ in with itself. There’s no definite lines of seperation so that you can see where the ‘stickies’ end and the new threads begin. Same for forum sections.
Other thing that annoy is the fact that the posters name/details appears on the right now, that’s just counter intuitive, as practically 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of forums out there put that stuff on the left (as did the old one).
It just doesn’t seem to flow 🙁
Take http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums these are probably one of the most popular forums sites in the country if not Europe. They are easy on the eye, nicely laid out, have clear lines of seperation and a nice uniformity that just simply works.

Hopefully with a little tweaking Ken can get these a bit clearer to use.

Bl**dy nora, it’s got worse now. The ‘View new posts’ View active topics’ has gone, the login has shifted. Maybe something to do with it going belly up last night, dunno. I can’t keep up…..isn’t technology a wonder eh?

    Re: Where’s everybody gone?

    I agree.

And no it wasn’t anything to do with the data centre falling over.

I’d be more than happy to change it back as I don’t like it as much this way.

To move the poster details to the left is a major operation and not the way that most phpBB based sites work and there’s thousands of them. The reason is that most people read from left to right, so content to the left with author details to the right is an intuitive and natural way to display content for reading. This is why when you use sites like Google, Bing, BBC and most any that have content rich sites, that the content is left, the blurb and menus to the right.

Attached is a typical eye tracking heat map showing how people read a website.

This is why the site was setup as it was, it works for the vast bulk of people, simple as that.

Believe it or not, I did actually do some research on this stuff. 😉

I’ve an idea Ken….Why not set it up the way YOU want it and, as most of us on here are ‘engineers’ anyway, are, by definition, very adaptable. 🙂

I’m beginning to think you might be right Martin, which is a minor revelation in itself. 😉

I know, everyone will think that there’s been some sort of mammoth seismic shift to the pattern of the universe. 😉

If we don’t adapt, we may as well be using Commodores. I said earlier that I recently changed everything IT and this change happened at just the right time.

The point is, do it as what is best for those that do the work behind the scenes, and that is the best manageable means with professionalism thrown in.

I tend to agree with Martin, and if you like the site and a regular user you will adapt and get used to it. Just needs moving out of comfort zones. Didn’t like it the way it was earlier today.

    Re: Where’s everybody gone?

    Thanks Alex.

I’m afraid that you are correct, whatever I/we did it’d be the same thing, only very different.

There are two things that are of the utmost importance to me…

It allows the site to grow and progress with a wealth of new features that can now be developed and introduced.

The actual substance and content of the site is unhindered.

Beyond that, sure there’s going to be some that liked it the way it was but, time and technologies march onwards and I’m afraid that like any website we are forced to at least try and keep pace. The old phpNuke based site had long since travelled well beyond it’s sell-by date and a change was desperately needed to have even the slightest glimmer of a hope to keep up with the rest of the internet.

But I do understand it’d been around for a long, long time… an age in internet terms and that people were used to it, knew its foibles, weaknesses and how to get around them. I have tried as best I could to make the transition to a completely new platform as easy as possible. It was all I could do.

    Re: Where’s everybody gone?

I don’t see what people are fussing about. I can scarcely remember what the old version was like. I never got round to using all the features on that – don’t even know what they were. In the couple of weeks this version has been live, I’ve adapted to it without any problem beyond the odd double-take and I know that if I ever get round to it, there’s a lot more I’ll be able to do with it.
One thing I like in particular, is the fact it fits on my screen laterally so there’s never any need to scroll to left or right. With the old one I remember sometimes having to scroll to see whose post I was reading.

At the risk of going “on topic” I was away in Hungary buying a house there. I’m back for a short while before I start moving my goods & chattels (not sure how you distinguish between a good and a chattel but they will all be taken in the same van anyway) over there and getting my cottage in Scotland ready to rent out.
