Mick you only require the rear board as your product number indicates your machine is already fitted with the new electronics.

Wadey, unfortunately your product number indicates that your appliance is fitted with the older electronics and you will require both boards, or if your extremely lucky at sourcing one, an older board.

Best to check before ordering if there have been any more upgrades to the elctronics which might affect your machine. (I stopped working for the Whirlpool agent a year ago so my information may be a little out of date).
I can’t go into specifics regarding fitting of the part but it’s behind the bottom panel on the rear of the machine.

Hi All,

Thought as this forum has been useful to me in the past I would shed some light on this problem. My machine suffered from this exact problem this weekend and I have found what fails on the board and fixed mine.

Over time it appears that the capacitor that makes up part of the firing circuit to the Compressor relay fails. There are four relays on board, three black, one orange (its the orange one that we are interested in as this enables the compressor). The relays are enabled from the microprocessor on the board via a triac controlling the switching of live onto a diode bridge and through a resistor and capacitor on the neutral side. Over a period of time the capacitor will break down and won’t be able to hold enough energy to fire the relay (door water solenoid problem) or enabling the cooling via the compressor.

The capacitors are four on a row, white in colour and have written on them .22/10 1.70MKP 250V~ this means that they are .22uf (micro farad or 220nf nano farad) with a 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} tolerance and are rated to 250vac.

What I know is that holding the PCB upright with the three black relays furthest from you, the four capacitors will be nearest to you. The far LEFT capacitor is to do with the icemaker ice eject mechanism, the far right capacitor is for the compressor. To test that this is your problem swap these two capacitors (outer two) and see if you machine starts to cool and that the compressor cuts in and out.

If this works for you replace the bad capacitor with a new one either from RS components or maplins (http://www.rswww.com or http://www.maplin.com). Make sure that you get the same capacitance but the voltage can be higher without any effect (I replaced mine with a 500vac one)

Please ensure that whislt working on the fridge that you have isolated the power supply and if you are not qualified call an engineer!! You will need a soldering iron and some solder to fix this.

I hope that this is helpfull to someone and should save you alot of money.

Hi Graphite,

Yes, thats the board, the capacitors that require replacement are top center in that picture to the right of the three grey boxes (other capacitors) they are underneath a sticker which straddles all four.

I have found a better replacement today from RS part number 190-8551, think they were 68p each. Going to try them tonight as the one from Maplins was too big and didn’t fit the board correctly. The one’s from RS are in a different package but the lead spacing is correct for the board.

Will let you know how it pans out & will take a photo this time.

I tried to get onto RS site & got stuck with registration & stuff – even tried completeing that but it seemed to be for companies only so I gave up 🙁

My appliance is still functioning – just noisy… So it’s not urgent just yet 🙄 – so i’ll see how you go 😀

Thanks Dufferuk – this should save a few people a lot of money!

For some reason, since I last posted, my fridge appears to have stopped making the irritating clicking noise and all seems well.

This could mean that either the faulty capacitor is holding it’s charge, allowing the compressor to function normally again or that the whole thing is about to explode. Hopefully it’s the former.

I did move the unit out to take a look at the board, so it could suggest I have a dry joint or even a sticking relay?

Hi Guys,
I have an Whirlpool american fridge freezer, 18months old. It’s a S20DRSS33 and the other numbers are 8586 158 15020 and 11 0423 000307.

Couple of weeks ago the lights flashed and funny noise heard by the wife but I didnt hear it so made a sound for her and she says like a relay chatter sound.

two nights ago the freezer side stopped working and we got the warm temp up. Yesterday the fridge side gave up. the cooling fan at rear is working if left plugged in and switched on. The lights all work. Display at front is working but the compressor won’t run. Am I looking at a similar problem with Capacitors? If so I cold go out today and buy it and do the job myself. (qualified engineer) but I work on large scale machinery and A/C compressors!!
Any help would be really appreciated as we have a 5 month old baby and all of his pre prepared food has been ruined, along with a freezer full of stuff.

Has anyone had any contact with Whirlpool re this, as it appears to be a relatively common fault?

If they acknowledge that there is a problem (which there clearly is), then surely they ought to at least meet half way with any repair costs as a gesture of goodwill.

I have tried emailing them in the ‘contact us’ section on their website, however there was a server error message and the email didn’t get through.

Just a thought.
