I tried an ad in Yellow pages couple years back.(Half price 1st year).
Got about 6 jobs for my £200 mostly quite distant.
That despite careful design of ad to make it absolutely clear where I was based.
I believe they gave me a free listing in Yell.com with that but I’ve never found it.
I doubt that any region-wide advertising can work economically for businesses distant from major concentrations of population. If it did, they’d put the price up!Maybe the internet will work eventually for us but at the moment I think it’s only economic if it’s free.(e.g.repairs@).And I haven’t even signed up for that myself because I cover such a small population that, IMO, £12 extra on insurance would be unlikely to be merited. (I calculated that repairs@ would need to be generating about 10,000 call outs per year nationally before I would get 4 jobs for my 25,000 constituency)
I might yet sign up though just as a tiny gesture of support for a site that’s given me a great deal. 😀October 13, 2005 at 5:47 pm #150070admin

Just to take this one step further…..
There are 80 ish repaires on Repairs@, if you all chipped in £100.00 +vat we could place a couple of “banner” ads within two sections of Yell.com
With a guarantee to increase the hit rate to repairs@ by 5000 hits.
Of course those who live in remote areas might not numerically receive the same as R600a who seems to get it all 😆 .
But percentage wise it would help everyone.
As already said, collectively we are strong. If we all joined Repairs@ and then advertised it nationally, between us, it would cut everyones yellow pages advertising budget, and make sense.
This is an idea with merit, consider if your willing to change direction and give it a go.
Kevin
PS, this is not a new idea, we’ve been kicking it around for ages waiting for an opportunity, perhaps this is it.

If there were 160 of us on repairs@ it would be £55 +vat each or thereabouts ❓ That I could easily afford.(After this good month).

KeymasterThat was my plan, to share the cost in a co-operative endevour. Only fair way IMO.
I believe that this is overdue discussion in the subscriber ares.

Here’s the deal guys…
On my desk is sat the rates for YP nationwide and, TBH as Kev will tell you, I’ve been itching to do something with it to save us ALL some money.
The problem is getting enough people onboard to make it worthwhile and cost effective for all. I have had one or two little ideas along the ways, as I do, to ease the pain but there’s no escaping the fact that YP are more expensive than Dick Turpin.
I’ve even gotten Kevin sold on the plan for this (trust me, that’s harder than it may seem, he’s a hard old nut to crack at times ;)) and I personally think that this is doable, very doable. But we’d need a lot of support from you guys to do it. This is part of the reason I’ve been banging on about Repairs@ and several other things over the past year (I think ahead, okay) and anyone with an ounce of sense will be able to join the dots there.
I like all my ducks in a row. 😉

No kidding. Those smug gits walk in my shop every year with a big smile on their faces, because they know they will be leaving with a couple of grand. 😡
I didn’t think anyone could afford not to use YP. Everyone uses it around here. I’d be very interested in a venture. And if you need some more support, I’ll personally ralley my local rivals and friends.

It’s like anything if EVERYONE chips in a bit they all benefit collectivley to a greater degree, it has to be they way forward.
The problem is and always will be that some people want to benefit from a collectve but aren’t prepared to contribute in any form.

I have to hold my hand up and say that other than a small advertisment in the local church magazine ( one call a year on average ) I have not paid a penny for advertising for over 20 years. I have thankfully always kept busy, but one of the main reasons I did not go in YP is because until recently in this area, if you wanted to find a rip off cowboy then YP was the place to look, I did not want to appear on the same pages as some of them. However, looking at the latest edition of YP for the first time in years I can honestly say that most of the known rouges have gone, with one or two very notable exceptions. I would therefore be more amenable to a joint venture. 🙂

KeymasterRe: yell.com
We could do it this way,
UKW can email all Repairs@ business with a proposal to join in the Yell.com advert.
We will explain the total costs and the expected rise in the hit rate to repairs@, that way you all receive the same info, at the same time. If we add a link for you to agree to participate, we will be able to advise all participants of the cost to them.Taking Jasons point a little further we are able to add a weighting system to the repairs@ selection proceedure ( we don’t at the moment,it’s a level playing field). That will enable us to weight the businesses who participate, therefore their business will be displayed more times than a none participant. Complicated! Not really, in plain english we can ensure those who pay for the advertising receive more opportunities from it.
UKW, will once costs are determined place and pay for the “banners” and then invoice each of you for your share of the costs (which you will already know). You get an invoice for your books we keep the admin simple for you.
The banner add is a 1 year contract, so those who join after we have done it will not be added to the “weighting” unless collectively you disagree.Thoughts

Kevin…
Yes I know that they all seem to hover round my honey pot..Must be my charm..(not).
I would be quite willing to pay extra which i have offered to do previously to get UKW more wide spread known.
yell.com may be a good idea if national number diverted to regional engineers ect,one number nationally.
