Are you sure the wash pump is working properly?
Also check where the feed pipe (runs up the rear) for the upper spray arms connects just behind the lower spray arm, the clips can fail.

it starts, drains the water, fills with new water – but as soon as the fill stops it trips the fuse and all downstairs electrics go off!

After the dishwasher fills the motor should kick in, seems logical to question the wash pump but i accecpt it could be other things ie heater or leak (contacts for the motor are low and can get wet if the machine leaks) thats why i suggested calling CDA.

Sounds like the wash pump to me, call CDA on 01949 862000 and for £69.99 they should come out and fix it
