I had same problem, have a policy with Dom @ Gen on washing machine and the machine stopped working following strange noise on 14 minutes remaining. Called out engineer through insurers who fitted new carbon brushes which didn’t work. Machine gave error code reading relating to motor, engineer phoned to obtain authorisation for new motor, pcb and control module – all approximately £300. Dom & Gen declined and wrote machine off. They wanted £330 for a £319 machine via Comet.

I decided to have a look myself, cheap motor on ebay etc, so removed back of machine to remove motor and found that belt had come off, questioned engineer who advised he took motor out and belt off to replace brushes (all this work in 5-10 whilst I was tilting machine – I don’t think so). So why when he put new brushes in didn’t he put belt on. Anyway drum didn’t spin and he took new brushes out and machine written off. I bought new brushes and put belt back on – machine now works sweet as a nut. Annoying thing is I could of shed out £300 when no need.

Makes you wonder whether these companies are working hand in hand. I’m awaiting outcome.
