ParticipantRe: Hoover 1400 stopping mid cycle and not draining
I have done some further exploratory investigation. I ran the machine of a 90 degree white wash with no clothes and noticed a curtain clip appear in the water in the drum. It did stop mid cycle and I had to turn off and on and rotate the dial to spin to get it to complete the programme. Strangely once it was complete, the curtain clip had disappeared. Feeling and looking inside the drum I am not quite sure where it could have gone as there appears to only be small holes on the drum but as I had previously found buttons and curtain clips in the filter I know there must be a way through. Would be curious to know.
Anyway I turned the machine on its side to access the pump area and removed the grey pipe that takes dirty water away. I ran water through this at high speed and blew through it and there does not appear to be any blockage in this pipe.
Now there was also a black pipe that entered the pump, I assume that brings the dirty water from the drum to the pump. Feeling along the end of this black pipe near the pump I felt a hard object inside and with a bit of a squeeze out popped the curtain clip into the filter hole. (Note I had removed the filter too again).
I was very confident I had fixed the problem but unfortunately not. Same thing happens.
I therefore wonder if there are more curtain clips or other debris blocking the pipes or if the problem is unrelated to this clip. Note my partner said she had put the curtains in the washing machine a few weeks ago without taking the curtain clips off – doh!! So it is certainly possible there are more of these clips lodged inside.
It is definitely capable of draining as when I turn the dial round to spin it sometimes works and does eventually drain all the water and then spins – however it does seem very slow at draining. And it doesn’t work every time – seems a bit random so perhaps something is moving around and dislodging and then blocking again?
Any advice appreciated.
–UPDATE!!!
I had another go at investigating the problem and was brave enough to remove the pump and remove several of the pipes feeding into it. To my surprise, I found a small sock, a wetwipe, 2 more curtain clips and what to me seems a likely culprit was a 10 pence piece lodged in a thicker black pipe. It seemed to be the same diameter as the pipe and was rotating almost like a door – at first I thought it was part of the pipe and some device for preventing water going backwards but then realised it was just a dirty 10 pence piece.
Anyway I have put it back together and running a programme with my fingers and toes crossed that I have sorted the problem. If not then I really will have to call out a repair man:)

ParticipantRe: Thermostat or Fan element?
I think you are right Bazza.
I took the top of it and couldn’t see any cooling fan. But I did turn the electric on to try and pinpoint the source of the noise and it does appear to be coming from the clock. I guess it always made that noise but I probably just picked up on it as I was waiting the oven to explode after my DIY attempts.
Anyway I guess that means job well done thanks to the wonderfully kind of assistance of Bazza and Adrian. Hot food for dinner tonight hooray!!
Thanks guys for helping me in my time of need.

Thanks Adrian
The smoke has stopped:)
The noise is very quiet – I have to pretty much put my ear to the top of the oven to hear it.
Possibly when I pushed the thermostat wire back into the back of the oven it has caught up with the cooling fan or pushed some of the “wool” type material onto it. I will take a peek now.
Thanks again

Thanks Adrian – that is a relief about the smoke.
Yeah the noise does appear to be coming from the top area of the oven where the clock is but it is not a clock ticking noise.
Do you think perhaps I knocked something when taking the back of the oven off?
I really appreciate all this help!

ParticipantRe: Thermostat or Fan element?
I realised I was being stupid when I just pulled out the old element without realising it attaches to wires behind the scenes.
Anyway I attached these and the oven now appears to be getting hot.
Couple of issues though – seems to be a bit smoky inside the oven and when I turn oven off I can hear a repetive noise – kind of like something small rotating. This is continuing even with the oven turned off using the dials. The only way to stop this noise is turn it off at the plug.
Any ideas?

ParticipantRe: Thermostat or Fan element?
Just been reading various posts and one says the following:
“Be careful not to inadvertently Figure 3pull off the electrical wires that are connected to the element as you pull the element free.”
I did not see any electrical wires. Once I had unscrewed the element, I pulled it out and did not see any wires. I just assumed the 2 prongs plug in.
Perhaps this is why it is not working? Perhaps not!
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for the swift reply Bazza.
I have never used a multimeter before but I am certainly willing to try. Can I pick one up from a DIY store?
The temperature light is coming on (well I assume it is the temp light as it is the only light).
And the grill works fine too. Still just getting cold air being blown about.
With regards the thermostat – it is very kinked and has a bit of the wire that has covering over it inside the oven too. Is it worth just trying to straighten it or will it likely be knackered if it is kinked?
Btw in case it is relevant, when the oven did stop working it tripped the electric in our house.
Thanks

ParticipantRe: Thermostat or Fan element?
Hi there
I installed the new fan element ordered from whitegoods and I am still not getting any heat. I assume I have installed it correctly as it is so simple that it is not possible to install it incorrectly.Any ideas? Could it be the thermostat?
Thanks
Paul

Thanks Adrian – I will order an element and give it a go. Hopefully no more difficult than replacing the thermostat was.
Many thanks for your help

Sorry I just found this reply.
Any videos/manuals etc on how to remove the oven to replace the theromstat?
Alternatively, any professionals in the Somerset area able to do this job?
Thanks
Paul
