ParticipantRe: Hotpoint SDW60 Salt problem
Thank you for your reply!
The machine suddenly seemed to behave for a few days – light went out, dishes were clean – happy happy happy – but now everything’s coming out white and rusty (although the light is off) Salt and Rinse aid both added…
Do your possibilities still sound like probabilities, please?
Is there anything I can do to diagnose the precise situation, or do I need an engineer?
Is there anything I can do to minimise the problem until then?
Many thanks

Participant…out of interest, what is the purpose of the control knob seal? Is it to stop crumbs getting into the workings, or something much cleverer?

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint SDW 60 Dishwasher – Error code 3
As far as I understand it, pump and PCB – is that the same thing? 😕
Thanks for those interesting points: –
The display (which started the whole think with the flashing light) did seem to stop working after we tried the tip-and-mop occupation…?
How would we reclaim the £99.50, please? the lady who spoke to Other Half made quite a point of saying it was non-refundable….
(I feel such a dimwit about this whole topic, but I guess we all have our areas of expertise 😉 )

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint SDW 60 Dishwasher – Error code 3
well – I didn’t call them, but Other Half did:
Implication that if repair is significant they will classify the machine as Beyond Viable Repair and we’d loose our £100
Can anybody give me a view on that?
And looking at the figure from our UKWhitegoods repair man, the repair total is actally £210, so getting a new Bosch for £295 might make better sense…?
Just want a *${e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}*! working dishwasher!!!

Alas, the problems caused by doing such a poor job of expressing oneself… 😳
I apologise most sincerely if I have caused offence to anyone – please believe it was inadvertant.
When I used that unfortunate word ‘munchkin’ I meant someone who is part of a big company – someone who I may only ever see once and who may be more restrained by a company policy. I did not mean it to reflect upon their training, reliability, or any other fine characteristics.
Hope this clears up my foolishness, and explains my point better: I value the personal touch of smaller businesses, but don’t know if that counts enough in this situation.
😳 and again 😳

😀 I didn’t know if the instruction manual would stand up to officialdom
S/N is SDW60P 31716170
BUT: –
Is it better to pay more to a ukwhitegoods affiliated repairman (who I trust) rather than pay less to a munchkin from Hotpoint (for whom don’t I have much respect)???

Ooh – there’s a good thought…
I can’t find any paperwork, though to prove when I bought the machine – eg registration docs. I can only find the instruction manual (but that is dated July 2004).
Well, I can ask – but I’ll want to make sure they’re not going to turn round and charge me the earth…!
And no way will I let them sell me any deals….

Sorry – should have included that
4 years old
I have no particular fondness for it, but we’ve got a tight budget, two small children and Christmas coming up – I have to think hard about coping short term as well as long-term investment…

Ok – the tip and reset didn’t work.
The chap from the reapirsatukwhitegoods nominated company has given us a quote for a new pump and pcb – £180 🙁
Do we repair our Hotpoint for £180 or buy a new dishywashy for £280? 😕
I can see lots of people have read this thread – opinions gratefully received from all comers!

We’ve tipped, we’ve mopped – we’re waiting for it to dry.
Can we at least switch it on – but not run it – and see if the error light comes on? Or do we just leave it untouched?
The suspense is killing me…

Thank you so much for a reply!
We’ll try that and I’ll let you know how we get along.
What would happen if it wasn’t full dried out at the point we gave it a try? 😯

Thanks for the tips – I will certainly give them a try – if they can’t help, they might know someone who can – fingers crosed!

Hello Dave
I’m southish-eastish of Edinburgh, right on the county line, so I vary what I say about where I am depending on who I’m talking to!
The EH postcode sppreads right around Edinburgh in all directions but north (cause there’s a big stretch of water in that direction!) and as far as I can see, there are NO listings for anybody as EH – am I doing it right? On the off chance, I checked TD as well, which is the postcode for the Scottish Borders to the south. No joy.
🙁

Hi Martin
Thanks again for a prompt reply.
Yes, I tipped it backwards again, as part of my effort to get it working again. I tried *both* your recommendations and it restarted, but I didn’t know which had done the trick – not that it really mattered, I suppose, if it failed again… No water came out, but I’m not convinced that I got the full 50 degrees, because the hose and cables are so tight – they have to reach past the waching machine to get to the sink, and I’d already pulled the washing machine out as far as I could to get some slack. D’you think it would make any difference if I managed a bigger tilt? I doubt it, but it’s worth asking 😕
Right. I’ve tried and failed to find someone to come out to it before – we’re 45 minutes out of Edinburgh (depending on your driving and the time of day) – and it seems like it’s the back of beyond to the city-based trade. Last person who did come out took the appliance away, charged me £80 and then sent it home with the fault unresolved. Do you have any advice on getting trustworthy help?
I wish I didn’t feel so brainless about these things!
