What’s black ? — the plastic cover of the individual wire or the metal wire itself. It’s probably dirt or paint on it. If it’s the wire try scratching it.
The wire may be copper or may be “tinned copper” i.e silver coloured.Dal5band

During the various visits, I noticed that the engineers tested the defrost sensors and the heater and said it was OK. They seem to just do a continuity test with a meter. If they are thermocouple type then I would think they deteriarate gradually so a meter test will not show a problem until the unit fails completely ? How do these sensors work ?

Mrs Dals5 here
Several “repairs” LATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a moan at Comet whose
the engineer turned up again a with a look of dread 🙁 on his face and we are getting a replacement fridgefreezer from them. Only taken since October!!. 😀May 7, 2006 at 5:57 pm in reply to: Samsung Fridge-Freezer RS21FGRS – Noisy fridge fan & ice #173965Dal5band

Hi Simon, We have one of these fridges and had the same problem. Fan gets noisy with ice and sometimes the drinking water frezzes. As the fan is restricted, the top of the fridge does not get cool.
As it was under guarantee, Comet came and changed the bottom back panel in the fridge section.
1 One problem seems to be the original panel was not water proof enough – it is a polystyrene pressing and water impregnates into it so on the defrost cycle, water is retained and re-freezez and collects more frost. The new panle also has better air flow – more room around the fan.
I suggest you take out the panel (after defrosting) and dry it out thoroughly in the sun, then seal it with some sort wateproofer or tape. After a few months, however, even our new panel is freezing up so Comet have been called again. However it is better than before. Panel costs about £130.
2 Check the drain hole. The defrost water collects in a channel and goes out the back into a tray over the compressor.
3 Apparently there is a heater that defrosts the evaporator (chiller coil) – Check this has continuity.
4 There is also some sort of sensor that controlls the temp.
5 Finally I have heard of the PCB being changed because the defrost programme has gone wrong – doubt if this is the problem but is a favourite with engineers as it looks good.Latest – Next door have a new Samsung f/f with more gismos – extra cool tray with its own control. They have had some freezing problems and have been offered their money back !! Looks like the design fault is still there.
Also while we were on holiday with only our sone at home, the fridge got better because the door was opened a lot less and it managed to defrost itself.

The icing up problem is back within a week – changing the back panel in the fridge didn’t fix it. Will be calling Comet again.

I had this problem (freezing water & noisy fan). Had to switch off for 24hrs, leave fridge door open and then it would run for about a week.
Comet came yesterday and changed the bottom back panel in the fridge section. This already had a fan in it. Took about 1/2 hour as we had already defrosted the frige. ( If frozen, the panel is stuck solid to the cooler coils – do not force).
They said the polystyrene in the panel gets water-logged and during defrost, the water remains in the panel and refreezes. The dfrost system cannot cope and the whole thing gradually gets iced up – hence noisy fan. The new panel has proofed polystrene. It had £129 sticker but ours was under guarantee.
See how it goes – will report back.

Hello mks, did you get the Samsung ff problem resolved ? I have the exact same problem.
FF is 13 months old, started by the chilled water getting frozen. Defrosted the water chiller pipe/tank in the back of the fridge, twice so far. Now the fan has gone noisy. Fan stops when you open the fridge so it is definatley the fan. The fridge temp. is behaving erratically.About to call Comet but found this forum so any background info would be useful.
